Title IX lawsuit settled for $2.48 million

Wow---your intelligent argument to belittle those who don't believe the plaintiffs had a legitimate case with strong enough evidence to prove their allegations has been shot down with $180,000 bullets.....by the plaintiffs themselves....Please take a minute to consider that reality.....

Is a woman's virtue, self-worth, and emotional well-being really only worth $180,000?

That's something that really makes me sick.....that these women may have been raped and then are forced to accept $180,000--does that sound like justice???

The TRUTH is that the plaintiffs' are the ones who have placed a $$$ value on their sexuality and self-worth by settling for something less than TRUE JUSTICE...IF they actually did suffer the indecent and humiliating crimes in their allegations.

No ma'am --in my way of thinking--the ONLY possible reason for filing the charges would be to get MY day in court and an opportunity to have my story heard.

I certainly believe that JUSTICE is worth more than a $180,000 price tag for RAPE.... :salute:

While overit's screed was absurd, this response is pretty miopic. "Justice" is not always a black-or-white thing. There are many shades of gray.

With the many thousands of women attending universities here in the United States, your 1 in 5 women on campus being raped statistic you provided ended any credibility perhaps you thought you had. You feel, you emote, you have issues, seek counseling and peace for truth is beyond you to recognize until you do.

Oh the 1 in 5 is believable when you count all the morning after regrets as rapes. The old two people meet at Ivy's, hit it off, get ****faced, and walk back to the dorm and screw like bunnies days are now followed by thousands of unreported rapes because the girl looks at what she hit and struggles to find a reason why. Guys do the same but look for a way out cause we know why we did it.....freaking beer goggles!

Unless it was fabricated in the first place.

UT could have settled for half that number last fall. turn it down at that time.

Holy crap. Shines an even brighter light on what this was really all about. And frustrates me at the same time that UT didn't.

There aren't any taxes on an injury settlement.

Was it an injury settlement? I thought it was a "We didn't like the way UT handled it" case. You may be correct, but it doesn't sound that way to me.

In the end, who pays for this? Taxpayers, fans who buy tickets to sporting events and parents/students who pay tuition.

Q2: How will the University pay for the settlement?

A: Payment of the settlement will be split equally between the UT Knoxville Athletics Department and UT Knoxville Central Administration.

Q3: Do either of these funds include taxpayer or tuition dollars?

A: No taxpayer dollars, no student tuition or fees, and no donor funds will be used to fund the settlement. Funds will be sourced from other income generating activities within the University.

Most of you idiots

No one said that no player did anything wrong. We are saying UT hasn't, isn't, and never will create a culture that encourages the raping of women.

You are missing the entire ****ing point.....

Also, we know who you are...

You also believe in paying college athletes, but your *****ing about them getting paid......

LWS- not saying this info is wrong. But the lawsuit was filed in the spring. The only way that the university could have ever thought about paying a $1 million settlement before filing a lawsuit is if the Plaintiff's attorney sent a demand letter with a copy of the proposed lawsuit. There were multiple allegations and many details that simply had to be alleged. I just don't logically see how the university could have settled this before the filing.

Dear Ms., Mrs., Mr. Overit's,
Missouri called, and stated that recess time is over. They also requested your return to your "safe place".

You tell me, before you call me "near-sighted"----would you settle for $180,000 out of court and without your day in court if you had a daughter that was raped?

And JUSTICE sir, in this case--does depend on the truth and not a monetary settlement. Simply stated--either the defendants are GUILTY as charged or they are NOT...

Those women were either raped or they weren't! You saying that justice is not always a "black-or-white" thing is like saying that a woman can be "little bit pregnant".

And UT was truly GUILTY of attempting to cover it up and failing to hold athletes accountable for their ILLEGAL behavior--

OR they are innocent of the charges and DO hold their athletes accountable to the laws of the land....

I fail to see any gray areas here.....

But--you do live in Alabama, where Fulmer was held GUILTY for TELLING THE TRUTH.....:salute:

I honestly wish that I had said this.
This is the point. UT is actually low on the scale of number of sexual assaults. The accusation that they create an atmosphere is absolutely ridiculous.

UT learned of the lawsuit last May and knew it was coming. They and plaintiffs met in fall to discuss settlement. It was at that time it was turned down. UT actually offered a counter of 10% to settle. that is 5% of what they ultimately settled on.

I know they probably did the smart thing...but it also royally pisses me off that they settled.

This was a win for UT. Any of the 8 could have refused the settlement which does little more than pay accumulated expenses the attorneys fees with UT admitting no wrong. The women had no case for the bite they were chewing off. Lesser charges of some sort may have netted them more money.
