"Hurd could be this year’s Derrick Henry. He is a big physical back with freaky speed on an SEC title contender. But even if the Vols do live up to the hype this year, QB Josh Dobbs would likely get plenty of the spotlight. Hurd’s back-up Alvin Kamara is also very talented and probably will keep Hurd from getting too many touches."

Feldman on Hurd's Heisman chances. Has him as one of the higher rated dark horse candidates.

Not that this is an end-all, but Hurd seems faster than Henry.

Doug Mathews just said it is hard to see Alexis Johnson play this year. Possibly return for future seasons.

Mathews also said:

Tuttle is ahead of schedule but probably won't be 100% conditioning right away.

He expects a big year from Philips. He's now healthy and maturing.

Marquill Osborne is having a big summer and will get a lot of playing time.

JG will likely overtake QD at some point this season.

Ryan Johnson has been very impressive. The coaches are surprised at how well he has been doing.

Preston Williams from a pure ability stand point is up there with the best we have ever had.

Nigel Warrior is gonna make some noise at safety

He's very excited about this year and he didn't day it but he seems like he wants to say next year will be just as good with the depth ut has

Is Matthews usually this optimistic or more of a straight shooter on everything

That JG projection is somethin'

And we all know P Willy is coming if he is healthy.

I really think JG is going to be a stud here. It will be interesting to see how the coaches manage the QB situation if he starts dominating during practice and threatening to overtake QD. There's only so much depth chart spin they can manage, especially if QD can see that JG is throwing the ball better AND is more athletic, and thus a better fit for the offense.

That would most likely send QD packing, but would Jones also transfer again?

Depending on how it shakes out, we may need to take 2 QBs in this class. Otherwise, we will have only JG, a RS FR, in 2017.

I said on the podcast the other day that I felt the good reports on JG were elite and the negative ones were nitpicky. He's an exciting prospect.

That said, I'm going to let the other QBs battle it out this fall before I strip them from the depth chart. They're very talented, as well.

No matter how good he is, I really hope he gets to red shirt this year

JG may be good enough to be the number 2 guy before the end of the year. But assuming Dobbs stays healthy, JG redshirts and the battle for the 2017 starter goes all the way to 1st game. I don't think Butch will tip his hand this season because if he names JG the number 2 QB at any point in 2016 QD and Jones will likely transfer and we are left with 1 scholarship QB and whoever they might sign in the 2017 class.
