Remember Attrition?

Charger, brother, I appreciate you having my back, but it's really not worth it. Some people just gotta be that way.

And honestly, I don't mind when people are that way to me. Just dislike the eagerness to discount our players, like they cease to exist to each other and the team when they've gotten injured, or lost a scholarship because of eligibility issues.

But some people just gotta be that way.

Back on topic: I'm personally not gonna count Blair or (EDIT) Raulerson gone for a few days, unless more news breaks. We don't know right now if it's emotion talking, or something more permanent like considering chances of playing time somewhere else that they wouldn't get here.

p.s. ty, Biker.

they are gone..

they are gone..

Thanks, LWS. Yeah, I read your more detailed comments in another thread. Sounds like the decision was initiated as much (or more) by the coaches as by the players. In which case, it clearly wouldn't have been just an emotional outburst.

Also saw where you confirmed Creamer has in fact left the program for EKU.

So that's up to four in attrition this off-season:
  • Creamer
  • Townsend
  • Blair
  • Raulerson

Vincent Perry is off scholarship due to his academic situation.

Young will be on a medical scholarship going forward.

Both still with the team. Don't know about you, but I never see just 85 Vols players; I see all 100-115 of them. The walk-ons make a difference too. Some on the playing field; others on the practice field. So let's count them all as members of the team.

Now, if you were reading this thread narrowly as a discussion of scholarship management, I could see your point. There's room for that perspective, too. But it's really about the whole team, not just the schollys.

Am I wrong or is there only 11 seniors on scholarship? 10 now that Blair is gone (although it doesn't open another scholarship for this class).

So 11 plus 4. A fifth scholarship is Perry doesn't get his stuff together.

Are we currently only looking at 15-16 scholarships for the next class plus whoever goes pro?

Looks like 12 of the 16 on scholarship: Lewis, O'Brien, Blanc, Blair, Bynum, Croom, Vereen, Dobbs, Sutton, Wiesman, JRM, Foreman. You probably didn't count Cody Blanc, but his page says he has one.

So 12 + 2 to 5 from the juniors, plus another if Perry can't get academically straight. Total between 14 and 18.

EDIT: Oh, plus Creamer, Townsend, and Raulerson's scholarships. Total between 17 and 21.

Online roster says 16.

Plus 2-5 juniors who seem likely to declare early (Kamara, Hurd, maybe Barnett, maybe Malone, maybe TKJr)

I'm counting 11 possibly 12 scholarship seniors. With Stocstill being the most likely IMO

Latroy Lewis
Dobbs
Foreman
Croom
JRM
Vereen
Bynum
Weisman
Blair
Blanc
Obrien
Devin Williams (I don't believe he's on scholarship, but I could be wrong).
Jay Rochell (same as Williams)
Stocstill (same)
Folger (same)

Somehow you missed Cam Sutton. That's the 12th.

These numbers are why we are likely to see more attrition. It just won't be the negative some portray.

Yeah, agreed.

You know another thing we're not seeing this spring and summer that we saw a TON of last year? Churning among the walk-on ranks.

The admin folks may be managing the online roster differently this year, but a year ago you'd see guys like Logan Fetzner appear and disappear and reappear on the roster every couple-few months. Like revolving doors. And not just Logan, a dozen or so of the walk-ons would variously be taken from the roster then usually reappear later.

None of that is happening this off-season, for whatever reason.

Yeah that was odd. Of course I also remember the uproar when big bad Paul's name was missing lol.

So right now we're looking at 16 spots with the four gone (assuming Perry gets his scholarship back next year).

LWS is right about Joe Young's switch to Medical scholarship freeing up another football scholly. So, 17. Plus two to five of the more likely Juniors who could declare (Hurd, Kamara, Barnett, Malone, TKJr).

So 17-22.

your right, I look at has scholarship players because of the importance of class management in relation to recruiting. that is limit of my roster management

I was counting him in my 4 but not Blair because I counted him as a SR. Are you counting Stocstill also

Ah, you're right, I double-counted Blair (both one of the 4 and an outgoing senior). So 16, like you said. Plus the 2-5 juniors most likely to declare: 16 for sure, 18-21 likely, then.

roster management on the Tennessee site is very poor and has always been very poor. they don't update as changes are made (players leave and arrive) but seems like just when someone feels like doing it.

I was at a spring game several years ago and sat behind a group that was spotting for player activity and recording of stats. They really didn't pay that much attention to what was happening. Lots of talking about things other than the football game. I wondered how the coaches ever got an accurate reading on the stats and how many plays kids played. Coaches surely went back and reviewed the film and made their own stat chart. I thought surely those people in the stands were just recording for the UT site and accuracy didn't matter.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning that incident once before. It certainly underscores that what we find on-line should never be taken as gospel.

Still, it remains the best stats-and-roster info sharing most of us will ever get from UT; so we go with what we got. :good!:
