Why I'm so confident...

Agreed.

This next year crap needs to stop. The 2016 Vols are the most talented and experienced team we've had since 1999.

To treat this year as a throwaway for "next year" is asinine. This is LIKELY the best opportunity this program will have to win a SEC and national title in the last 15 years.

We better not waste it. Cause next year we'll be WORSE. We'll lose a lot of talent and experience.

2001 called and left a message "hey what about us?".

We'll be worse next year as well.

I really don't get the idea some have here that we'll be better in 2017.

2016 is the best shot we might EVER have to win it all.

We'll be losing guys like Hurd, Kamara, Sutton, Barnett, and JRM after this year. Even if you don't think Dobbs is as good as I do, that's a lot of elite guys we'll be losing that will go down as among the best in program history.

This idea that we're gonna be better in 2017 is comical. Especially after a less than stellar recruiting class in 2016.

I think Georgia will be pegged as the early favorite to win the east in 2017.

That's going a little overboard saying this year is the best chance we'll EVER have. We've won it all before and we're gonna win it again whether that be this year or a little further ways down the road. I do agree that we're gonna miss Dobbs, but we will reload at the QB position. I will also agree that we will not be better in 2017, but we've got the talent to be at least a 10 win team considering the experience we have behind the starters. We're loaded on defense (especially the DL) and we've done a more than average job recruiting even though this years class wasn't top 5 like previously. We're reloading good enough to contend for the East and stay near the top with CBJ here.

beating UF and Alabama and going 8-4 is not ok with me - it means 4 losses to inferior teams

If UT were to beat both UF and Bama then there is no way that the Vols would lose 4 other games on the schedule. The only other games that I can see being question marks are UGA, TAMU, and Va Tech, and that last one would be a pretty big upset.

Saying ever was going overboard. But I do think this is possibly our best shot in the near future.

IMO this goes beyond recruiting. We've gotten lucky the last couple of years in terms of how many of our top prospects have lived up to the hype. And how many under the radar guys have exceeded it. I don't know if that run continues.

There are many teams with 4 straight top 10 recruiting classes on campus that can't field a contending team. See Auburn.

I don't think future top 5 or 10 recruiting classes guarantee anything. Right now we know what we have. We have a championship contending team.

We shouldn't waste our golden opportunity.

2001 overachieved. I don't think they stack up talent wise to this team.

go look at that roster. 2001 was a helluva team. talk about draft picks? i think there were 16 or so players off that roster that made an NFL roster at some point or another. that team was loaded. so was 99...but good grief.

that's true, but i think there was a bigger picture on that decision....a) we weren't going to be that good in 2013 or 2014, we weren't great on the LOS on either side of the ball.

b) there wasn't another QB past Josh Dobbs at that point. there was no QD, or JG or SJ in the fold...the future of the position was very much a question mark, so i definitely think he was hedging his bets for 2 more years of Dobbs (16 and 17) just in case we didn't sign a QB of the future.

it didn't work out that way, and hindsight being what it is, it's worked out.

I get making plans but good coaches adjust them to win conference games. The UF game was joke at QB in 2014.

So, did CBJ refer to his chart or analytics when his made up his plan? Because it was obviously the wrong decision to make when you look at the talent level of Worley and Peterman vs Dobbs.

He underestimated what could be done in such a short amount of time. Wrote off 2014, and invested in 2017.

But the thing is we will have Dormy and Gman to Give their All for the Vols.

Go Vols!

I don't know about that. 2001was Better at WR, TE, O-line, D-line and linebacker. I'll call QB a draw right now, but hard to argue against Clausen with his record in big games. Travis Stephens was a beast, so I'll call backfield a draw. Special Teams favors 2016 and so does the secondary.

Have a better chance of beating them next year? No offense, but it didn't get much better than last year. We let em off the hook again. Every sane person that's been paying attention knows we should be going for a 3 game winning streak. There is no better chance than THIS year, no more next year crap.

Last year was our best chance to win over the past 11 years but the glaring mistakes on D did us in. This year our LT will be starting his 4th game, Shoop will still be learning how best to use the players, Tuttle probably won't be 100%, Dobbs showed an unwillingness to throw down field even when Tabor was suspended and VH3 was noticeably injured so this year will be harder not easier. I just don't think we can beat the good teams in the SEC being one dimensional on offense

2017 will be a reload year rather than a rebuild year. A steady increase rather than a bump then down again. We will have quality starters and quality 2s and 3s in 2017. Along with an increase in freshman players that will be able to red shirt.

Look at what we are going to sign, and I don't think the money of the NFL is as big of a draw than to represent the Vols. We may see a trend of players staying rather than go pro.

Go Vols!

I disagree. Florida won't be as good and we will be better than we were. Compared to last year when we played them in the swamp.

Go Vols!

That year we had 10 players drafted, 3 of them were top 15 picks...

Edit: The next 2 seasons we had 12 players drafted. 8 in 2002, 4 in 2003.

But the gators will gave their own problems. More than UT. But yes, we will need much more out of the passing game to be able to become an elite team.

Not coincidentally, a new poster/talent evaluator appears on UGA forums in 2017 named Eason4Heisman.

Against UF - special teams, open field tackling and perhaps 1 trick play on offense

Against UA - defense keeps them in 3rd and long, Hurd pounds the rock, clock mgmt.

2 "W"s in my opinion (if we do this)

I refuse to say, "we're back" until a we beat one of our main two rivals. As soon as we do, I'll shout it from the roof top! But, I'm very optimistic and confident that Alabama and Florida can both be wins for us this year.

Think about this: over the last 7 quarters of play against Alabama, we out scored them 34 to 33. I also believe had Dobbs started the game in 2014, that we would have won. Florida in 2014 too for that matter. I thought after seeing him in the Spring game in 2014, he should have been our guy. No red shirt. That's a debate.

Against Florida, we have lost by 1 pt in each of the last two games. Now, defense is deeper and more experienced and headed by a much better DC and our coach will not make the mistake of not going for two ever again. Defense wins for us in 2016. But overall, team confidence and chemistry seems at an all time high. Talent, character, and pride everywhere.

We get both, Alabama and Florida, games at home, and while some say it's a negative they aren't spaced out, I think it's a good thing. It prevents us from getting a rest/relax mentality. We should be playing at such a high caliber by time we host Alabama, I think the schedule helps us and we will be ready.

I'm more concerned about Ga than either Florida or Alabama. I can see 11-1 or 10-2. 10-2 may be enough to keep us out of Atlanta. However, I would be totally fine with that if we beat Alabama and Florida in the same year. Hell, we beat both them teams and go 8-4, I'm still ok. Disappointed but relieved as well.

For all those of you who share in my confidence, what other factors do you see to add to this?

Wow your last paragraph is pitiful. No disrespect. This fanbases obsession with Florida and Alabama is beyond insane. If this team beats Alabama and Florida and yet still loses 4 games, then that is a failure of epic proportions. We have proven we can beat Georgia even when they are more talented. This year they are not.
