Spencer: Scorpio won't do anything for you if you don't have a 4K TV | Games industry news | MCV

Screwing up again.

Looks like I will be grabbing the S. Especially with Forza Horizon 3 supporting HDR.

Yeah I'm going to do the same thing. I don't own a 4K TV and don't plan on getting one anytime soon. I'm also not the least bit interested in VR.

Also, I don't know if anyone is interested in this but MS is now offering customizable controllers with a ton of different color combinations and I think they're going to offer etching options...

Am I missing something? Isn't it a given that a 4K console will only be in 4K with a 4K tv?

I think what Spencer means is that the console will work on 1080p sets but you're not going to see the benefits of it unless you own a 4K TV or plan to use VR, other than framerate boost possibly. I'm sure games that run at 30fps on Xbox One will run at 60fps on Scorpio.

I guess I am missing what the issue is. The PS4 4K console will only really be an improvement for you if you have a 4K set as well right?

Frame rate boost possibly or better textures, better lighting, better anti-aliasing.

Think of it like a PC where people with high end PC's can run a game with graphical settings maxed out and people with low end PC's can play the same game but with graphics settings on low.

Sadly, it looks like this is the direction consoles are going in. It seems that MS (and presumably Sony) wants to make consoles more like PC's and eliminate the concept of consoles being defined by generations. Instead they want it to be looked at as a constant ongoing platform with upgrades coming more frequent and incremental.

Thanks for the better explanation Brave.

Here's Phil Spencer's quote...

Still running a 1080p TV? Then you should forget about buying Xbox Scorpio. That’s the message from Xbox boss Phil Spencer. He was asked by Eurogamer about the thinking behind announcing the new Xbox One S only to an hour later reveal a brand new machine, Xbox Scorpio.
“You should buy [the Xbox One S], because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you,” Spencer said after asking the reviewer what TV he had – in this instance a 1080p set. “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see."
“Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you. For us in the industry, it's easy to think that most power is always the thing that wins. If you look at last gen, what won? The Wii won. The Wii sold more than we did on Xbox 360 and the PS3, and it wasn't the most powerful console out there. Price is critically important. Wii was a good price and it had a great experience.
“Scorpio is for the person who's got a 4K television, who's really focused on 4K gaming. It's going to be a premium price over what we're selling this one for, and both of them will exist in the market at the same time. Scorpio is for your 4K gamer. And that's what we designed it for.”It was speculated yesterday that while it seems Xbox Scorpio will have a quite significant power advantage over PS4 Neo, that advantage will come at a cost – that literally being the cost, which could be some $100 more than Sony’s new machine.

I've tried to figure out what MS is doing here but I'm drawing a blank. I just don't understand it.

AAA titles for the most part aren't running at 1080p on the xbox. I can see how throwing a top tier graphics card and new chip would help. PC gamers are running 4K games on better systems so it's not impossible. And graphics cards are about to come way down in price with the 1070/1080 cards coming.

However, the comments made yesterday just don't make sense. If this new Scorpio can generate games at 4K, why on earth wouldn't it benefit everyone? Surely it'll spit out 1080p just as well. How would it not benefit everyone with a at least a 1080p display?

So, they want you to buy a system now after they've told you there is a better one next year? And they think this is going to help adoption rates for the XBOX? How?

And it's going be great when all the people that hold off finally see a price that they can't afford. After waiting they will have to save more or settle for a clearly inferior version.

The last time MS tried to lead was when the PS4 and XBOX One were announced. No more discs, game sharing, always on internet....yeah, they hit a home run that day. This seems like more of the same here. Dumb decisions to keep mining dollars out of our pockets.

Phils comments yesterday were complete BS or they don't even know what they are doing yet.

I am wondering if he said those things to drive the "S" sales.

Maybe it has something to do with MS' insistence on the whole forward and backwards compatibility policy with this new approach? Maybe they're telling developers they have to make these games run on both consoles equally so as to not create a system of "haves" and "have nots." :dunno:

Honestly, considering the Scorpio is probably going to be pretty expensive and all of MS' games going forward are going to be on both Xbox and Windows 10, why not just build a good comparable gaming PC? At least that way you'd also get the benefit of being able to play Steam games along with Windows games.

I have always wanted to build a PC. I might do that in the near future. Depending on the price of Scorpio.

Seems like MS is trying hard to create their own steam here and turn the xbox console into essentially Steam boxes.

Because sitting at a computer monitor and playing with a keyboard and mouse sucks big time when compared with kicking back in a recliner playing on my big screen with a console controller. Just my opinion, but I'm also far from a competitive gamer. I know a lot of people play their consoles on the equivalent of computer monitors.

Gaming PC's aren't just sitting at desks anymore. I have some friends who are into PC gaming big time and they have theirs connected to their HDTV's and use Xbox One or Xbox 360 controllers. Either that or they're streaming their stuff from their PC to their TV's.

I play mine on a computer monitor. Will never go back to gaming on a TV.

Really? You don't play ANY games on your TV? Geez I know monitors are nice but so is playing on a 60" plasma.

Been close to 2 years since I've played my consoles on a tv. Moved my systems over to my desk one day and have never moved them back.

Started with Destiny and using my PC to move around items between characters. I've never bothered to move them back even now that Destiny isn't played as much.

I prefer monitors as well. I think being close up on a 27-inch monitor beats sitting 10 feet from a 60-inch tv. But I can see how people prefer the larger screen.
