Lady Vols Recruiting Info

Two separate issues. I don't necessarily think that Tennessee will be one of the top challengers to UConn's crown. Going into next season, South Carolina, Notre Dame, Baylor, Texas, Ohio State, Maryland and Louisville should all be ahead of the Lady Vols in the pecking order.

I'm sure that Dangerfield will fit in nicely into UConn's returning lineup, but I don't see her being as good as a freshman as Moriah Jefferson was at a senior. I also don't think that any of the returning players will be able to replace what they lost with Stewart and Tuck graduating to the WNBA. They still have talent, and they still have Geno at the helm, but there is a strong likelihood that they will look like the team right after Taurasi graduated; talented, but firmly in the middle of the pack.

That will all change once Azura Stevens suits up, so the opportunity is there for the top teams to claim their scalp once they are vulnerable.

I agree with your assessment of UConn, but I'm not that impress by Louisville or Texas. Both teams will be loaded, but only 5 can take the court at a time. Louisville should of at least made it to the 2nd weekend this previous NCAA Tournament. Texas will be talented, but like us some times they look terrible on offense and struggles to score. I also think people over react when it comes to Baylor. They've been loaded the last few seasons and what have they accomplish? It never fails, Kim Mulkey plays a very weak schedule during the non-conference and then goes into BIG 12 play undefeated and then walk through the BIG 12 with a few hiccups and gets sent home in the Elite 8. I'm telling you I do not see these 15 player rosters working out for Baylor, Louisville, Maryland, Ohio State or Texas. I just don't see the point of having a maximum amount each year. I think a roster of 12 is good. After last season, when it comes to the Tournament things can change drastically. It's all about match-ups. Maybe we will perform better since the target is not on our back and finally get to the Final Four. To me next season is wide open.

I've heard this excuse from Holly apologists for a while, but I don't think for a second Pat would have let this one get out of the state....

I'm not an advocate for Holly and acknowledge she still has to grow as a coach, but we as fans must come to the realization that Holly Warlick is not and will never be Pat Summitt. Holly doesn't have the same influence, demeanor or respect Summitt had. When we as fans realize Summitt is history and move on it'll be a little easier to continue to process this transition and journey of the Lady Vols program post Pat Summitt. It was awesome while it lasted, but every program will experience a dip when their Hall of Fame and legendary coach retires. Just thankfully Tennessee is still relevant and has the fan support that even some elite programs don't have. Maryland have been to two Final Fours in the last three seasons, yet they have to put on long curtains some games to hide empty seats. When Geno retires, some UConn fans will be very upset also because that program will not be the same and will also take a major dip. Texas is just now becoming relevant again after Jody Condract had Texas as a consistent powerhouse. Every elite program will have to transition into the next era of the new coach.

+1....it was amazing while it lasted! :( it's hard to move pass the Summitt Era, but it's a must for some fans in order to keep sane. Hopefully Holly can establish herself as an elite coach, sooner rather than later, to help ease the transition for the fans still stuck in the past.

Having 12 or 15 players is mostly irrelevant, because 12-15 aren't going to get PT to begin with. And while it's true that you can only have 5 players on the court at a time, don't underestimate the benefits of a deep bench. For example, if your starting C gets injured for the season, it's nice to be able to rely on a McD AA freshman post to fill the spot instead of your undersized PF or underweight backup C.

I wish Tennessee had 15 players on the roster. They will go into next season with 2 post players ready for action, and a third as a project. They don't have legit backups that will be playing their natural positions. I hope Russell and Nunn are sturdy, because they will be carrying a huge load on their backs. If anything happens to either of them, the team is sunk...again. Would have been nice to have one of Baylor's bench post players.

I agree and if not one of Baylor's Post, McCune (who we gave up on too soon imo and Reeves was able to snag at West Virginia before she left) would have been nice and she wanted to come here from what I was told but because she dipped in the rankings we stop recruiting her.

She dropped in the ratings because she was deemed too slow and had no lateral quickness.

The Lady Vols should not be in this discussion for the National Championship and likely never will be with the Head Coach that is there now.....Exhibit 1 is 2015/.2016 season......and if one wants other exhibits then just examine all the other years that Holly has been in charge.

Exhibit 1 is losing to the runner up in the elite eight?

UConn just graduated the top three picks in the WNBA draft. Does anyone think a team can lose that much talent and not drop significantly in ability? UConn doesn't have enough talent left to make the Final Four this coming year. The year after, with Stevens on the roster, UConn will be very dangerous again.

I think they will take a nice fall back to Earth. In my opinion they are still a top ten team but they no longer possess an overwhelming talent majority like before. In face, UCONN will have a few games next season where the other team will have more overall talent. But it's not always about talent... with that said, I'm still predicting two or three losses.

Didn't the Lady Vols go from almost not making the tournament to the Elite Eight? You never know really.. I think Holly has potential.

I agree with this post and would like to add......
Anyone who has played the game knows what full court pressure defense does to another team! Especially if that team has a long bench with substitute players that can come in and continue the pressure while the first stringers rest for the next onslaught!!!

And any coach worth their salary will know the strengths and weakness of the opponents key players and if they have good backups!!! They will go after the players that do not have back ups to get them out of the game and sway the advantage in their favor!

The thing about a bench with 10 players who are seeking playing time is that, you as a coach should know what these players talents are and if they need to play now or next year. That is a difficult juggling act for some coaches and they seem to always have trouble with the players who want to play now. I think a coach has to let a player know what is expected of that player. If they are being developed for next year, it is better for the team and the player to let them know this is what you are doing as the coach.

No, it's losing 14 games, many of them to mediocre/bad teams, plus barely beating a bunch of bad teams and not being able to utilize and develop talent or run anything resembling a competent offensive system.

I understand that, I just disagree with the assertion that Dangerfield wasn't coming here no matter who the coach was.

A good coach, or even an adequate coach, at Tennessee should always prioritize in-state talent especially once a generation talent like this one. That's a big reason Dooley failed here but fortunately Butch seems to get it. The more success Dangerfield has at UConn the worse it looks for Coach Holly Goodenuff. I guess yet another thing that was Elzy's fault....

I've said it many times. Letting Dangerfield get out of the state of Tennessee to UConn was a major mistake. We can't allow top talented recruits from our own state go elsewhere. That just can't happen!

We didn't "let" her (or any other top recruits) get out of the state. They choose to go elsewhere because Tennessee is not a desirable place to play.

I get your point of view, but what do you do when the recruit says that an out of state school has been her dream school and she was just simply waiting on an offer?Currently UConn is hot and recruiting players to come there seems relative easy because of their current success. Just like Moriah Jefferson chose UConn over in state powerhouses Baylor and Texas which I'm sure recruited her very hard. For as Elzy, I don't know what was her fault or not when it came to recruiting, but when you have people in the AAU circuits like Kenny Kalina who is believe hates Tennessee say that Holly made a great move by letting Elzy go, something went on that people in the know refuses to discuss. I heard that if Elzy would of stayed there would of been a few transfers. I like Elzy and have no clue what went on because the person who is also very close to the AAU circuits wouldn't go into detail, but said it was the right move also and that people are very deceived when it comes to her. Again I have no clue what went on and I'm no so call "insider". I do believe the story that was shot out that Elzy left to pursue head coaching opportunities was a complete lie. I believe something went on the entire season that also had an effect on the team, but no one will come out and say what really happened.

You recruit your a## off, that's what. Butch just landed an elite instate safety who grew up an FSU fan and dreamed of playing for the Seminoles.

"Player X always dreamed of playing for this school, what was Holly supposed to do?"
"This other program always led for Player X, what was Holly supposed to do?"
"All the other programs cheat in recruiting while Holly does it the right way, what is she supposed to do?"

I am so damn tired of Coach Goodenuff's apologists making excuses for her (not putting you in that group Vol720). I don't care who the coach is. No elite HS player in TN recruited by Tennessee should leave the state. Ever....

You do realize that Butch misses on some great players he wants in the state of Tennessee don't you?
