Releasing our Derek Dooley hatred

My hatred for Dooley is minor compared to my disdain for Mike Hamilton. Worst AD at evaluating coaching talent ever, IMO. Dooley was just the main exhibit.

He could coach from a stool...

...wielded a mean cane...

...was a confident leader...

...and kept it classy in defeat.

2011 was the only year Dooley didn't sign any O-linemen. Stop trying to make it sound worse than it was. Dooley was brought in to clean house and be more of a parent than coach while we were still under NCAA probation. The top talent wants and needs to be recruited using sometimes questionable tactics. Dooley and UT couldn't do that at the time. We can and probably are doing it now so we can bring in top talent.

Derek... is that you?

I never liked the fact that he grew up "between the hedges". Also getting Sunseri in there - when his son was playing for Bama and a pretty good player, BTW - while our defense was the worst EVER.. To me, it was like our biggest rivals were planting moles and having a good laugh at our expense.

I don't know about the moles, but the having a good laugh at our expense I can guarantee was happening.

I don't blame them, but it's time for some payback now.

Grudges to hold.......yeah, we got 'em.

Kiffin and Dooley were equally bad. Kiffin, if he had stayed, would have gotten us in NCAA jail. Dooley thought he could live off of his dad's reputation. They were both were program killers. Hamilton hired both so that speaks for itself! I dislike both but for me it is time to move on. It was what it was! VFL and GBO!

To add to that Lane was living off his Dad's name too.

Go Vols!

For me, it was all about his lack of leadership. In the most important leadership position on the entire team.

Some of the more basic leadership rules of thumb Dooley routinely violated:

1. Praise in public, correct in private.
2. Take responsibility, provide cover; never pass the buck.
3. Listen first.
4. Don't make excuses. Ever. It's yours, so own it.
5. Faith in each other is the only glue you get to hold the team together. Earn it by practicing it...constantly.

And finally, this one from retired General Colin Powell:

6. Remain calm. Be kind.

The frequency with with Dooley broke those very basic leadership tenets was astounding. He should not have been in charge of a 5-man fire team, much less a 10-coach, 100-player, several-hundred-staff, multi-million dollar program.

That was my #1 beef with him. He was a rotting infestation posing as a leader.

I find this thread amusing. The majority of the fan base still thought that dufus could do something, right up until the end.

These pics sum up the Dooley era for me. They say more than words ever could.
