For me, it was all about his lack of leadership. In the most important leadership position on the entire team.
Some of the more basic leadership rules of thumb Dooley routinely violated:
1. Praise in public, correct in private.
2. Take responsibility, provide cover; never pass the buck.
3. Listen first.
4. Don't make excuses. Ever. It's yours, so own it.
5. Faith in each other is the only glue you get to hold the team together. Earn it by practicing it...constantly.
And finally, this one from retired General Colin Powell:
6. Remain calm. Be kind.
The frequency with with Dooley broke those very basic leadership tenets was astounding. He should not have been in charge of a 5-man fire team, much less a 10-coach, 100-player, several-hundred-staff, multi-million dollar program.
That was my #1 beef with him. He was a rotting infestation posing as a leader.
