Tennessee Cancels Classes for Home Opener

Look for negative spin of the "Tennessee putting football before academics" variety, though. The Tennessean and Anita Wattawhiner are bound to be all over this soon. Haters gonna hate.

Agree. Baylor can give Briles the key to oncampus rape, but we cancel classes and Butch should be fauhred.

Been on the strip lately? It's always a mess but it's reached the acme of traffic messes.

My son is bummed about it. Get a day off from class and then have to take finals on the Saturday of the SEC championship game. You can skip a lot days of school but you really can't skip finals. He went on a rant about it at supper tonight. "Thursday football is for high schools - Saturday for college and Sunday for pros - Stadium won't have 75,000 in it because it's a Thursday night, Dad, are you gonna go"... uh..uhh "Well yes, I was planning on it, and staying on your sofa"... another questioning look.

Then he went on to say that Bama cancelled classes, or delayed the start of classes for the NC game last year. Perhaps another schedule shift by the administration if we win the east. Who was it that said this sent the message "Football over academics"? As Lee Corso would say "Not so fast, my friend!"

So many topics in one post. I feel exhausted.

Guys, this just made the freaking ESPN scroll... like it's breaking news or something! Those a-holes wouldn't report this if this was done at some place like Wake Forest. They even did the bunny ear quotations around the explanation to add a sense of disdain to the scroll. Sometimes, VN's paranoia of ESPN is justified. That was ridiculous. This is not newsworthy.

"Tennessee doesn't care about academics" I can see it now...
I know, right?
But in all honesty, unless that is written on a UT Football program or on the inside of a whiskey bottle, most of us won't even see it.

Humor!! Face it, the rest of the SEC needs us to spot them a few academic days so they can keep up!

understated. I just got back from there. Its more of a war zone that a road. I have faith they will get it back to some sort of normal by the Appy St game but its gonna be close.

Man, it's going to be rough asking off for both Thursday and Friday. Really wish the office gave us our Labor Day "day off" on Friday instead of Monday. I haven't missed a UT home opener in years. Can't even remember when. It would be pretty upsetting if I had to miss it.

Downtown business needs to cancel work , there is donor parking DT in the garages and those pesky workers will take valuable spots. I have a 6 hour drive Thursday AM but at least get to park inG10.

This is why a Thursday night game at UT is such an epic brain fart of an idea. Most schools can easily get away with it because their campus doesn't sit adjacent to their city's downtown business district and they aren't landlocked to a riverbank. For those many people who work on Gay St and park, for example, in the Dwight Kessel garage (as I did from 2003-2006 but thankfully no longer do) this game will be very disruptive. I just wonder whose idea this was and how much time was devoted to a cost/benefit analysis.

The Washington Post dissed UT about it yesterday. Yet tomorrow when Cam Robinson skates on the stolen gun & drug charges, there will be little disdain for Bama... or Saban, who fully intends to play him.

In the past UT administration has been very vocal about not playing Thursday night games. This is news because we have turned them down for Thursday night games before and kind of made a show about it.

When I was in school finals were during the last 2 weeks. Most students finished up by Tuesday of the 2nd week. By Friday campus was almost completely empty. This will affect some students but not the vast majority

That's not why they reported this. I doubt they even did enough homework to be aware of that. It makes for a simple narrative which suits a scroll perfectly. "Look at the SEC school placing football over academics!"

Getting out of class for a game is awesome but they moved the first day of finals to the day of the SECCG
