Tennessee

No one wants to believe in Tennessee until they actually see it on the field. There are a lot of critics of the Vols heading into the season because of all the hype and accolades for a team that didn’t exactly live up to expectations last season — losing four times in agonizing fashion.

The popular saying goes, “Let’s see Tennessee actually finish off some close games in the fourth quarter before they are anointed as one of the top teams in the SEC.”

However, given the fact that Tennesse has one of the nation’s best quarterbacks in Joshua Dobbs, among the best duos at runnning back in Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara, and possibly three future first-round picks starting on defense — Derek Barnett at defensive end, Jalen Reeves-Maybin at linebacker, and Cam Sutton at cornerback — those hoping to see Tennessee prove itself in close games this season might end up disappointed by how few close games the Vols will actually play.

The whole "it's always Tennessee's year" line is the laziest crock of nonsense that sports writers cling to these days. And it's propagating horse crap that younger fans take for gospel because they think it makes them sound like they've been in on the joke too.

How could 2015 Tennessee not have lived up to hype when they finished the season ranked higher than they started?

Stop using logic, it's upsetting to the masses that want the Vols to be no better than average each season!

It's a byproduct of losing 4 super close games. To those on the outside it must seem like Tennessee is such a good team that surely they were expected to do better than 9-4.

The reality is that before the season there weren't too many that expected us to even be playing 3 of the 4 teams so closely. That, in reality, means that we exceeded expectations.

Gotta beat (NOT just "play close") seriously ranked/regarded Teams to get respect...

Hopefully...THIS is the year for that.

Agreed. The losses were disappointing, but the record and ranking ended up right around pre-season predictions.

You can also spin the close losses to OU and Bama, two playoff participants, in a positive way.

In any event, I think Vols take that next step this season.

All that's pretty accurate. Time to put the disappointment of past seasons away....it all sets up for us to have a special type season this year.

If that didn't do it, making the claim that Vandy was on the rise was evidence enough the author was clueless.

The writer lacks the courage of his convictions. "I'm too cool to buy the hype, Tennessee, but I'ma put you on my "trending up" list anyway."

Heh. Hehe. :)

This article proves one of these two statements are true:

1. We are way too obsessed with college football. The season is over two month away, but we still can't give it a rest.

2. The rest of the world: the news, popular entertainment, other sports, and our personal lives are so lacking, repugnant, and boring that we see college football as our best option to avert our eyes from the rest.

Logic says there are far more than two ways to interpret that article and VolNation's collective response to it. The interpretation I like best, because I think is closest to the truth, is this: there are a lot of folks who like to spend their free time chatting about college football, particularly their favorite team, the Volunteers.

See? Nice interpretation that belittles neither us ("obsessed") nor the world we live in ("repugnant").

[I'm a big fan of not making things worse than they already are by talking them down. :good!:]

Well, if by 'pretty accurate" you mean that the last paragraph was, then I agree completely.

agreed. i'm not sure how this perception of TN and "wait til next year" happened, but it's there none the less.

but as for actual expectations they were picked to finish 2nd in the East...and they did.

I've been saying this for a while now. We might have a 2013 FSU type of season. Lots of blowouts. Basically no close games.

Folks will be surprised by how DOMINANT this team will be.

Folys resignation ensures that programs decline.

wishful thinking. unless they have a mike hamilton waiting on the baton....

the reality is Florida is always going to be in a good spot to succeed. talent rich state, ginormous enrollment, big time alumni base....

Foley is handing the keys to a ferrari to somebody. their job is simply not to wreck it.
