ESPN's Peter Burns ranks pressure on SEC Coaches

I personally wouldn't rank Butch that high, but I can think of some reasons to make the argument. Thoughts?

I would put
1. Sumlin
2. Mahlzan
2 B. Miles
3. Stoops
4. Muschamp (I think he has no room for error at USCjr, there is no honeymoon for him. This hire still baffles me.
5. Mason

Amazing that nearly half of the West's coaches have the potential to be fired after this year. SEC is cold blooded.

I think it's fair, the pressure is on for Butch to clinch the East this year which likely means going at least 10-2 so I'd say there's a fair bit of pressure.

Nick Saban should be #1 on that list!

He says in the comments section that 'pressure' and 'hot seat' are two different things. I've always thought of them as the same. I don't think Butch should be ahead of Les Miles (who was almost fired last year), Mark Stoops or Gus Malzahn... and does any 1st year coach ever have much pressure? Even Nick Saban had a 1st year grace period. Kirby Smart shouldn't be #5... and finally, 'Peter Burns'? Really? :eek:lol:

Pressure to stay off the hot seat.

His perspective can, perhaps, be described most accurately by reference to a quote from the character Del Gue in Jeremiah Johnson: "Well, Mother Gue never raised such a foolish child!"

To me Hot Seat means most likely to be fired and it is NOT very likely for Butch this year.

Pressure to win, heck EVERY coach puts themselves under alot of pressure! JMO

Check this site, Coaches Hot Seat 2016
Butch is 115th and Satan is last at 128th.

Pressure to stay off the hot seat.

that's fair. i guess.

i don't think there's a chance he winds up on a hot seat, barring a complete and utter collapse this year.

even if there is a difference between pressure and hot seat, how does being on the hot seat not warrant being under more pressure?

which is why Malzahn and Sumlin should be 1a and 1b on this list. i think not having muschamp on there is a mistake too. he's not going to get the typical state of grace other new hires get. he comes with baggage.

and if you want to put Jones and Miles on there after that, fine. i'm good with that. there is pressure on Jones, but at this point with the roster he's got and results to date, it's what i would consider "normal" pressure at TN.

and that's a good thing.

I think its fair, though I'd go Sumlin, Malzahn, Miles, Jones (maybe Butch before Les). I think the pressure is viewed from outside because we coached our way out of some victories last year and if we do that again this year, we all know as fans--the rumbling will begin. We have a special team this year, and a lot of that will be going pro afterwards, and we need to make a jump in performance to cement ourselves for recruiting and results.

People outside don't realize this administration isn't going to hire a new football coach if they can help it. They realize the **** pot CBJ took over and are more than pleased with progress made thus far.

Sumlin
Malzahn
Miles
Stoops
Mason

I think it's fair. He is under a lot of pressure to win the East and should be. I think he would agree. He so much as said so multiple times.

Jones at #2!?!?....smh!

Under pressure to beat UF? Yes.
To not get fired? No.

Did volnation submit this list. Haha

It has almost become a Volnation tradition to talk about firing our coach. And since it has previously worked out so well and all I can understand.

Butch is sitting in the catbird seat in terms of being able to do some things this season. Sure there are some expectations along with that.

Miles on the other hand would have been fired near the end of last season if the governor (at the time) had not intervened. He is on a very short leash.

By the way ... who the F is Peter Burns?

Sounds like a vd symptom.

Many of these writers don't really know the program. I mean, not even as well as the average VolNation participant.

Many of them think Butch is under pressure for the circumstances surrounding the Title IX investigation. Forget on-field expectations, for them it's just about the lawsuit (and their very limited understanding of its particulars).

They think Baylor --> Briles --> Fired == Tennessee --> Jones --> Hot Seat, at Least. That's as far as their math extends.

I don't know if that's true of this dude...anyone can put a list on Twitter with no explanation behind it, and it might mean anything.

So that's about what it's worth. One guy's list.

A lot of folks in this thread have come up with better ones, imo.

they also realize that the program has been remade and if Butch fails then they can hire whoever they want.

Butch has little to no pressure. He has resurrected this program while there are several other coaches in the conference that will be under tremendous pressure to win or at least be highly competitive. I would put all the West coaches except Saban and from the East I would have Mason, Stoops, Muschamp, and Smart ahead of Jones as far as pressure or hot seat is concerned. Even though Muschamp is in his 1st year there he still has some bad stink on him from his Florida tenure and Smart has to prove right out of the gate that UGA made a good decision by letting Richt go. All the pressure that seems to be on our team seems to be coming from national media. Even if we win 8 or 9 games his seat will not be close to be warm. He's done too much to have everyone just all the sudden turn on him after this season.

I agree and actually I would use the word "silly" at this point to say CBJ is on the hot seat. The last thing this university wants is to lose its head football coach (especially one that has generated as much excitement around the program we've seen in years) and start a process of finding a new coach that would end in a train wreck. WE WANT STABILITY and we are getting it from CBJ....hopefully the big time winning will follow....

Pressure relative to what? Meeting expectations? End of season ranking? Compared to other division coaches? Other conference coaches?

(if it's in the link, obviously I didn't click it)

And who is Peter Burns? He's got a profile pic of the Gamecock's stadium. What does he know about football?
