I love when people see Tennessee making $100 million a year from football--well over a million per scholarship player--and conclude that the players should be "grateful" for a scholarship worth 2% of that

Pretty sure that football money also pays for a lot of other kids to get scholarships as well. Track, baseball, softball, etc.

Ever see the average cost of staging a game? They gonna share that? Food and travel? Medical? As is there are non renewable scholarships, do they ramp that up if we pay every player on scholarship? That oft injured 5th year senior who has a storybook final season prolly gets jettisoned by redshirt sophomore year, if not earlier...sorry son...price of doing business. I just see a potential ugly unexplored side to making college sports a junior pro league.

Also I'm skeptical of that 100 mil profit you cited...slight exaggeration?

It already is a junior pro league for everyone but the players who make it what it is.

The team is valued at $121 million, so no. That's what the players actually generate. After setting aside money for academics and other sports, football keeps around $94 million and their profit is $70 million.

Forbes Welcome

We estimate that even at the least expensive schools athletic departments typically spend upwards of $2 million per year on football player scholarships. And for schools like Notre Dame and USC, which cost some $50,000 per year in tuition (and don’t provide in-state discounts like public schools), those scholarship expenses easily top $5 million.

But put another way, an entire team usually costs less than its head coach. Not just that, but those players are getting “paid” in the form of an education opportunity they often can’t take advantage of because of their football obligations. And as much as coaches truly earn their paychecks by operating these massive businesses, there simply isn’t any value whatsoever without the players putting in the hours of training and taking almost all of the risk.

Would a 3 year bowl ban amd loss of scholarships bother you?

Sure. It would make me mad at the NCAA's idiotic rules and selective enforcement of them. The anger directed at Tunsil or Arian Foster for being honest about something many people would do--and many players already do--is misdirected. Tunsil is not very bright, but the players aren't the problem.

brings to mind how good that Bray offense really was.

If we only had a bit of defense to go with it.

And now the man behind it is on the Georgia sideline.

Sobering.

Come on defense!

Kiffin brought Cheeney in here from St. Louis and then he stayed on with Dooley.

You think Kiffin's input with Smart might have been in play getting Cheeney on board with Smart?

Anyway, Cheeney is a winner and might save Smart's bacon!

His health? Maybe maturity should have been included.

What about his maturity in KC has been in question? Please link something about that please. From all accounts of him in KC, he has been very mature and Reid and staff think very highly of him.

I live no where close to kc to give two ****s what the third string qb might have done off the field. Im glad he's gone and glad I'm not a KC fan.

They've kept him through his injuries and have never really declared that Murray was ahead of him. I think Murray is legitimately on the bubble.

Bray is far more talented than Murray, the only question is can he put it all together. He has the arm talent to be a very good starting qb in the NFL if he can stay healthy.

I don't like being a grudge holder but, Bray tanked it against Kentucky to avoid going to a "crappy" bowl game while he was here. He can eat **** as far as I'm concerned! Not a VFL!

Bray played that game with a broken finger, and the flu (Dooley was quoted saying that Bray had come down with the flu the day before the game), but keep holding a grudge.

If Kentucky ever gets an NFL franchise don't expect him to show up to play against them.
On a serious note I have been totally done with the guy ever since that day. You don't quit on your team. Really can't think of another VFL who I care less about. I am always, always supportive of our former players but Bray is an exception. You don't get to be too cool to show up for a Tennessee football game and give your all.

His head hasn't been an issue in KC.......and really, how much of an issue was it while he was in Knoxville? He's second to Peyton in passing yards in a season and TDs in a season and would have been second in passing yards in a career if he had stayed another year. Seriously, the Bray hate is pretty over the top.

Unless you're Reggie White, and then you get your number retired.

I see where you're coming from, but Bray is hardly the first Vol to take plays off.

There's a bit more to the Kentucky story than people want to admit.....the guy had the flu and he wasn't the only one who "quit" on that team, you can put all that blame on the shoulders of one man even if his mama would defend him to the end over it.

Hate is a pretty strong word.

Mean it. That era is a period that made my late twenties awful as far as football goes. He pissed away his time and the guy that said he was good a few posts above is laughable. He was beaten by Vanderbilt and a terrible KY team that played a backup wr at qb. We lost those two games because he played like balls. He helped tear our program down to the ground. You are entitled to your opinions and I am mine. You like him and I don't. My guess is those who like him are younger and those who don't are older. Either way let's go Butch and co.

Late twenties/early thirties is "older?" Cut yourself some slack lol
