Top 10: Bold Predictions For 2016 Newcomers

Wouldn't be so quick to count QD and even Sheriron out so quickly. Plus, JG has already said he's good with red shirting. We have a really good QB situation going forward and JG is but one (big) piece of it IMHO.

Where did he say that? I saw an article where he said he fully expects to challenge for the #2 spot and learn from Dobbs.

I never said meaningless time. QD didn't play against any legit competition in game last year though. If JG plays this year as back up he will have as much or more game experience as QD. If you think that time won't help development then it didn't help QD the past year. If it did, JG would benefit form the same situation. Either way QD doesn't have much more experience.

I never said anyone but QD. I know Dobbs is better and think JG will be better. If you believe in any of the ranking, all star camps, or expert opinions they also believe JG will be better. JG is way more highly thought of coming out of hs. QD wasn't some top qb recruit like JG is. One is a top 80 player and the top dt qb. One is a 262 ranked number 18 qb overall and number 11 ps qb. I'm not the only one who believes there is a huge talent gap.

Maybe he won't go after three years. Either way I doubt he stays 5 years with a rs year. It would be more likely he leaves after his rs JR year if he meets expectations. Maybe even after a rs So year if he does well. So we need to get him all the time we can.

Dormady had an average freshman year and an average spring. JG, on paper, is the best qb we have recruited since Peyton. If he lives up to the hype Dormady never sees the field.

You have an uncanny knack for presenting your opinion as indisputable fact. And your use of "camp" and "experts" makes me nostalgic for the Torrance Gibson thread. Remember all the resources you utilized making the case for that wide receiver? Good chance you're right that Guarantano is better...why do you get desperate and lash out anytime Dormady gets MENTIONED. You not trust Butch to put the best guy out there? Afraid that if you're not vigilant, Dormady agents will swing the election for your kid nemesis? Chill out and let things happen...they will anyway. :eek:k:

And I saw an article where he said he's ok with redshirting. I wouldn't expect (or want) a QB who didn't want to compete...and say so. But he can learn from Dobbs on the scout team also. And remember, the kid has had significant injuries the last two years...could be beneficial to have a year of training with lessened chances of incurring another one...definitely won't hurt.

Red shirting would be ideal...just like it would have been ideal for Dobbs and just about any other QB for that matter

He also said he will compete for the #2 spot and would prepare like a starter. We will see.

FTR, the article didn't predict Guarantano to be the #2 QB in 2016. It was predicting that he'd eventually beat out Dormady to be the starting QB.

I don't think anybody doubts that Dormaday is the #2 behind Dobbs for the time being.

I definitely recall an article where he said he was okay red shirting next year, don't recall exactly where the article was, perhaps it's in his recruiting thread.

Here's a quote from USAToday where he says he's "gonna wait his turn".....

“When I get there, I’m going to be the backup and wait for my turn,” Guarantano said. “They may even redshirt me my freshman year. When I was a freshman here, I was a backup to an all-state player (Jonathan Germano), so I got a little taste of that.”

QD only has a year head start on JG. A year where he looked ok and only threw 22 passes. It not like either will start this year. If they both are what they were supposed to be when recruited then JG will overtake him. There is a reason QD was not a top 15 qb last year and JG is the top player at his position. JG was over 200 spots higher in the rankings and a top 80 player. JG is much more highly thought of coming out of hs. People here have just overhyped QD. He is no Josh Rosen. JG is a consensus top 5 qb. If they are what the experts said then JG should beat out QD.We basically only have film to compare and JG's was way more impressive. QD didn't wow this spring or last season.

QD not being rated very high had a lot to do with him missing his entire jr season of HS with an injury to his throwing shoulder so that he was only rated a 2* when Butch offered. So he had a lot of ground to make up with the star raters his sr season. QD is much better than some want to give him credit for. That throw he made to Ellis in the bowl game with a DL dragging him down showed me how tough that kid is.

However, I also am excited about JG. He is a great fit for this offense. But I predict QD will be a very serious challenge for him for the #1 spot in '17. But that's a good thing because the competition will be good for both of them.

I think people are also underestimating Sheriron Jones! Dude is a baller, and would be a good fit running this offense. If he improves on a few areas, he may prove to be a challenge for QD and JG in '17 as well.

Nah. I've seen enough of his throws at practice. He has a funky throwing motion. I don't see him as a serious contender.

It'll be Dormady vs Guarantano for 2017 starter.

I would bet serious money that Dormady is #2 on the QB depth chart coming out of fall camp.

I agree, He will more than likely just play garbage minutes this year (same as last year). JG will ideally red-shirt this year and compete to take the starting QB job in the spring, why waste a year of eligibility for garbage time, unless Dobbs gets hurt (God forbid).

Dormady is a place holder until next year. He will never be the full-time starter here. JMO but if he does somehow win the job, I really don't care as long as we win. I just see JG taking us further than Dormady could dream of. Once again JMO.

We're becoming numb to you 2-3 Dormady haters.

I hate Dormady because I don't think he will be the starting QB here? Makes a ton of sense. I don't hate John Kelly because I think Hurd and Kamara are better. That is a ridiculous statement.

I think Dormady is a good QB, I just don't think he will get the opportunity to be a good QB here. Because there will be better players not because he isn't any good.

That makes me a realist not a hater. :)

No, it's not a ridiculous statement. You've been railing against QD ever since he stepped on campus as an EE, before he'd ever taken a spring practice snap, stating that you think he should and/or will transfer. You tried to fluff it up a bit by saying he'd be do good somewhere else, just not here, but that was predictably transparent.

Even when it was Jones who transferred (but came back) and not QD, you carried on with the unseemly opinion that he should transfer.

Perhaps you don't see the distinction in having an opinion about a kid's ability and chances to play at Tennessee and predicting he will and damn near advocating that he indeed should leave the program before he ever got started.....but a lot of us do.

This!! Granted Dormady is a solid skilled player but his talent level is what it is. He played for his father in high school for crying out loud. If you don't think his father promoted his strengths and did what he could do to hide his limitations then you are ignoring why he was ranked as he was coming out of high school. Dormady were he asked to run the offense last year or this one IMO has been coached not to make the big mistake and I can live with that. But from all indications Sheiron is more talented and brings something closer to Dobbs on the field than does Dormady. But is Dormady the long term future at QB for the Vols? No IMO there are 2 kids in SJ and JG that are better suited for this offense than he is.

Yes. He will wait his turn because he knows Dobbs is the starter. He will redshirt if needed but has not conceded the number 2 spot. He has consistently said he is coming to compete but will back up or redshirt as needed.

Being ok redshirting is not the same thing as for sure redshirting and not even challenging for the number 2 spot. Either one won't be a surprise. Neither option is a foregone conclusion though.

He has never said he expects to redshirt, just that he will if it is the best for the team.

When and where did I say anything about him "for sure red shirting"? I said that he said he's open to/good with red shirting this year....which he did. Also, other sources, while praising his abilities/talent and predicting stardom for JG, have also dubbed him a good redshirt candidate for 2017.

I'm not trying to put words into his mouth, but I believe I remember watching an interview of him, closer to when he committed, in which he said he expects to or plans to redshirt (or something along those lines). :dunno: Although, I know he has also said, “When I get there, I’m going to be the backup and wait for my turn.” “They may even redshirt me my freshman year.
