9-1-16? (Vols' season opener moved to Thursday)

I'm just shocked so many people had their plans already made for this game. It's not a wedding.

...says the guy who lives in town.

It's only ~100 days away and it was scheduled for a holiday weekend. Of course people had already made travel arrangements. You can't call the Holiday Inn up in August and get a room.

Says the guy that doesn't need 3 and 1/2 months to figure out how to attend a game that I would really want to go to. Have you ever attended an away game? a bowl game? How much time did it take for you to book tickets? And last I checked you don't have to stay in the city. Several times I've booked a hotel 20-30 miles outside of a city where I was attending a game. Just comes down to people are soft and seemingly like to complain about anything that doesn't fall right into place for them. Anyone whining about not being able to shift their plans should be embarrassed.

I dont think anyone 'likes' complaining about this

I've done it both ways. I've decided at 8 am on gameday to jump in a car and drive six hours to a game I didn't yet have a ticket for; I've booked a hotel and a flight five months ahead of time. If they'd abruptly decided to move that 2007 UT-Cal game in Berkeley to Thursday night, I'd have been screwed. I don't think I would been "soft" if I'd been pissed off about it.

Put yourself in the shoes of a season ticket holder from west Tennessee. You've got a now-useless, possibly nonrefundable hotel reservation in Knoxville on Friday and Saturday night. You've got to work on Thursday and Friday, and maybe vacation time is an issue. You donated a lot of money for the privilege of buying this ticket that now you're going to have a hell of a hard time using. It's understandable that some people are angry.

I mean, my wife and I are thinking about going to Texas for the A&M game, which is currently scheduled on a Saturday. We could not go if if it were on the preceding Thursday, because we have work, kids in school, etc. But the schedule says it's on a Saturday, so it should be fine for me to go ahead and plan the trip, right?

Let's say I book everything, spend the money....and then ESPN decides to shift the game to a day when I can't go. Is it "whining" if I get mad about it?

Why are they doing this?

Won't there be tons of people from Tri Cities, Chattanooga and Nashville that won't be able to come now because its during the week? Plus, normal people even in Knoxville have to work during the day and aren't going to want to go home after work then come to the stadium.

Someone didn't think this through.

Of course they thought it through. They thought, "Duuuuuh, ESPN tells us we have to move our game. Our fans will be heavily inconvenienced and it will probably hurt attendance. Duuuuuh, 9/1 is the date that Appy State upset Michigan a few years back. Nothing wrong there. We must obey our masters who run TV. Screw the fans".

It'll be cheaper for a hotel now since it's not on the weekend! Hurry up and book your hotel rooms before the Knoxville hotels get the memo and raise the rates.

For those that live several hours away from Knox. with jobs, kids in school, etc. this sucks.

I can see why the game was moved, but it means a lot of people won't be able to attend. I recall the uproar a couple of years ago when UT opened on Sunday night. That caused a bit of a stir, but most people had Monday off (Labor Day).

The fans for the game being moved either live in or near Knoxville, don't have school age kids, don't have to work early Fri or were going to watch on TV anyways.

But - I see why Butch would want the night game along with a few more days rest before Va Tech. I think this will hurt the attendance though.

Everybody is acting like this was a Butch or Hart whim. The SEC needed a team to switch to Thursday, and our guys thought that it should be us stepping up. Doesn't mean we're going to go all TCU or Utah and become a fixture.

Just sucks. We live behind enemy lines in Birmingham, season ticket holders and now I've got to take them out of school for two days to see the game on a Thursday night? Can't happen. You would understand, but the legion of 19 year olds on here have no clue about life and how things work, and will argue until they're blue in the face don't have a clue.......Yet.

I'm raising my babies as VFLs, but they will miss this one. Luckily enough they won't remember.

Maybe you'll be able to YouTube the epic Appalachian State matchup on their graduation day party? :dunno:

I'd be really frustrated if I'd have booked a nonrefundable flight and/or hotel planning on a Saturday game. I certainly understand people's frustration it you are in that situation.

However, if your only issue is having to get off work/kids in school, etc -- Take advantage of this situation. Thanks to Freak for sending out a text when this change was made because I was able to immediately go online and book a hotel downtown for just over $100. I'm just going to take Thurs and Fri off, spend Thursday night in beautiful Knoxville hopefully starting the season off with a bang, and then enjoy a long weekend trip somewhere for Labor Day.

From Butch's perspective, this probably seems like a major coup -- he's able to get out of the shadows of all the big time games on opening weekend, and be one of the prime time games on opening night (which means all the pundits will be talking about us Friday and Saturday morning), and then the following week UT is THE prime time/big event game for the Battle at Bristol. Back to back weeks to start the season of being in the national spotlight against two very mediocre opponents -- that's great marketing strategy. Very very savy in my opinion. Sure there are some (rightfully) upset people. But Butch and the UTAD aren't dumb. They know you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.

See y'all Thursday the 1st!

Once again, you guys are making this out to be some nefarious orchestration. I think UT just said "ok".

Exactly. UT vs App St. isn't going to move the hype/ratings needle regardless of when it's played. There are about 15 games on Thurs. anyway.

People will tune in to watch whichever game they want. UT fans will certainly watch this game.

Ok.

Hey, I have another off-topic question for you: what's the reason why ESPN doesn't release the viewership and ratings numbers of each of the games aired on the SEC Network after every weekend during the season?

Just curious if you know the answer.

Because a network has to be in existence for three years before it is rated by Nielsen. There is currently no way to measure exactl viewership numbers on the SEC network.

Just a heads up. The holiday inn downtown is not charging fees to change reservations and they have rooms available as of now. Also, I checked the Crowne Plaza yeaterday and rooms for Thursday thru Sunday are still available. Rates are around 130/night. As a supporter of local knoxville business and a resident I hope most of the travelers can still come and enjoy the game and the town. Hope this helps
