Bob Shoop explains what he would have run on 4th down against Florida

"It’s a play that will stick with Tennessee fans for a while. How would new defensive coordinator Bob Shoop have handled it?

4th and 14, less than two minutes to go at the Swamp, ball at the Florida 37-yard line, Tennessee leading by six. Last September, the Vols rushed three with a QB spy and played a deep zone. The result: a 63-yard catch-and-run to give Florida the lead and an 11th straight win over the Vols.

While on The Tony Basillo Show, Shoop explained what he would have done.

“Jalen Reeves-Maybin asked me that question,” Shoop said. “He said, ‘What’s your identity as a coach?’ I said, ‘My identity as a coach is, 4th down, game on the line, I’m coming after you."

I appreciate a confident coach, but he has yet to coach a game with these kids. This season is full of hype. There's no need to add gasoline to the fire this early.

Shoop must be ecstatic to have this kind of talent at his disposal. Not to mention, for the first time in a long while I feel very confident that our DB's can be put on an island without being exploited, allowing the pass rushers are unleashed. Conversely, I think the front four will be able to get pressure a lot of times without blitzing, in obvious passing downs.

Yeah, everbody and their brother know that Hurd, Fornette, Bo Jackson Jr. at Bama are gonna get the ball; it's no secret, but can you stop them?? Same with Shoop.

Can't say I remember him much at Penn St and I watched a few games. Not even when Bama played franklin's crew at Vandy. So far, what I've heard, no one in the SEC will be able to run the football on his defense, no one. And he's willing to take a lot of chances on passing downs. Sounds like a risk, reward kind of guy.

Yeah... That's a fair assessment. Of course if you look at his defensive stats his teams seem to always perform above the given talent level. I like his style of play much more than what we have had here going all the way back to Chavis. I like aggressive defense. It's what I was raised on.

It's not like he doesn't have two potential All SEC backs as well as a scrambling QB to practice against. Say what you want, but a defense that's been practicing against Hurd, Kamara and Dobbs probably has a pretty decent advantage over someone like South Carolina or Miss State.

Kind of like what most winning coaches do. I'm not ready to say that Coach Shoop is a guaranteed winner, but it's way better that what we've had here in the past couple of hires.

For real. However, we finslly have some horses, more than we've had in a very long time, and with a more aggressive scheme that doesn't include a soft zone with a spy 10 yards off the ball on 4th & 14 that allows a freshman QB to stand in the pocket unencumbered (after you'd just blitzed and left him woozy after planting in him the dirt) to convert yet another (5 for 5 that day) 4th down which wound up ending the game.....well, it may not matter whether or not we're able to "sneak up" on most of our schedule, Bama, Georgia and Florida notwithstanding.

Besides, we're getting overhyped so damn much these days, that I doubt anybody is gonna "overlook" us. Most of the better teams are probably sick of hearing about Tennessee by now and won't have any trouble getting up to play us.

I do remember Tenn was pretty much riding the hype train with the media last year. Y'all were bringing back a lot of talent and expectations were screaming. Looks like it's going to be much more intense this time around. Y'all know the routine, "when much is given"...................

National Total defense rankings for Shoop as DC....

At Vanderbilt...
2011- 18th
2012- 19th
2013- 23rd

Again, that was at VANDERBILT.

At Penn State...

2014- 2nd
2015- 14th

Then, juxtapose those defensive rankings with Franklin's simultaneous national total offense rankings which, on average, was in the 90s out of 128 teams.

As far as no one being able to run the ball on Tennessee under his watch, I agree it's beyond confident and pretty damn brash. But he worked miracles with very little to work with at Vandy, and did similar things with a Penn State team in the midst of some pretty severe sanctions coming off a horrific scandal. He'll have more talent, much, much more talent to work than he did at Vandy for sure, so let's see what he's able to do with it. Any Tennessee fan has to be very optimistic.
