I agree. I don't get this. I've been critical of some of his gameday and press conference stuff, but I'm not sure how anybody can't feel great about how he's brought this program back to relevance in pretty short order, and that includes how he's put his staff together.

Strip is a great hire, as is Thig, Gillespie, and now both Scott and Shoop for sure. Martinez is a solid hire and it appears DeBord is as well. Azzani and Mahoney means he's not batting 1.000 IMO, but who does? He's 7 for 9..... Solid as a rock IMO.

I actually like Azzani but I can't question the substandard performance of the "throw game" of which he is responsible for. I'm pulling for him to have success this year with this portion of our offense. It will be the difference beteen a good year and a great year.

Coaches cannot win. A coach says were not there yet and it is prepping us for a bad season. Coach says we will stop the run and it is trash talking. This is nothing like the talk from Miami in the 86 Sugar Bowl.

I like the swagger from King Kong and Shoop Dog. We've missed it for far too long.

I'm not saying that his hires are good or bad hires. I'm saying that Butch doesn't seem to upgrade/hire until he's forced too which I see as a problem.

When Jancek left, Butch knew he had to get a grand slam based on all the hype around the program. Shoop didn't have to be "sold" to come here. It was an easy fit.

I don't think he fires people just to fire them for an upgrade. Jancek and Butch probably argued for awhile before Butch gave up on him. Same with Bajakian.

Pretty sure you're reading the Jancek dismissal incorrectly but I'm not an insider so I can't say for sure.

Agree. I think everyone believes, all things being equal to 2015, that an improved passing game is what puts team 120 over the top and in Atlanta at season's end. Hard to argue with that. I also think we have an ace in the hole with Shoop's hiring....gotta believe his impact puts an end to all the ridiculous 4th down conversions and defensive collapses late in games. Barring injuries, it sure looks like 2016 can be special, which for me is 10 or more regular season wins.

Ya'll better be patient with this defense. REMEMBER... it is NEW to everyone except Shoop. The D is NOT going to be gangbusters straight out of the gate. Hopefully... by the meat of the SEC we will be greatly improved.
UT NEVER meets expectations with units expected to be "great". It's usually the opposite. Our OL will probably be much better, while our defense will lag behind due to the learning curve.

K. :good!:

What about Bajakian? What was the deal there? Most insiders seem to think that Butch was ready to cut bait with him and pretty much told him to look around....that's why he went from OC at a storied D1 program to coaching qbs at Tampa Bay...maybe Bajakian had other ideas, but that doesn't seem like much of a professional upgrade IMO. As it turns out, given how our offense performed as a whole last year, especially with the running game, I think DeBord was an improvement there.

Next up was Elder. Very good young coach, takes off for Eastern Ky. I was a little bummed at first, but then Jones goes and gets Scott.....gotta say that's an upgrade overall.

Finally, no matter what the facts and circumstances were that led to Shoop (regarded as one of the best DCs in the country) replacing Jancek, who I thought did a pretty solid, admirable job at Tennessee, with Shoop is without a doubt a significant upgrade.

Look, I can find a few things to criticize Jones about, things that, quite honestly, get under my skin....things that I've voiced and been called a "negavol" for, whatever the hell that is. But I just don't see how anyone can take much issue with how well Butch has rebuilt this great program, and with whom he's brought in to help him do it. He gets an "A" for that part of his job IMO.

Well, I still think Jancek was at least looking into the DC job in Miami. His son is still on the team so I don't think it was based on Butch really wanting to fire him. I would assume if your family member got fired for any reason, you might not want to continue with the people who put your own family member out on the streets. I think Butch felt betrayed and was forced to hire a proven DC. (Possibly Dave Hart got involved) I think Shoop was the first target and Shoop didn't hesitate that much.

How long have you been on the the 10 win train?

Well, I was firmly documented as being on the "9 win train" last year. While I find it difficult to be displeased with 9 total wins after the NWestern beatdown in the Outback Bowl, I don't subscribe to the idea that we "met expectations" last year. We could've and should've absolutely won at least 9 regular season games once we actually started playing the games in September, rather than just talking about them in July and August.

10 wins seems fair to me this year, but, quite honestly, it's still a bit of an arbitrary number to me. I could easily make a case for saying 11-1 in the regular season should be the goal, but there are a couple of road games that are gonna be challenging and both Florida and Bama are still on the schedule.

Why do you ask?

I just think Butch doesn't really "fire" his staff

Nobody real fires anyone at high levels of an organization. The writing is usually on the wall when set standards of performance aren't achieved. Butch as a good leader would make these known and there would be nothing personal when a parting of ways occurs.

We were both on the hype train and both were somewhat disappointed last year. I'm working very hard to be skeptical this year. It's difficult, though. I can make a case for 11 wins. I like the CFB Matrix where wins and loses are roughly projected by recruiting rankings. Going by that, we are only outmatched by Bama and UGA. UF is even. And, I can see us beating UGA with their new coach in his first year.

...But....I'm TRYING to be skeptical.

:)

I think coach Shoop sees all the talent he has to work with and he is licking his chops to get after offenses. JMO!

You obviously have no clue about big business or football. Go sit at the Tux table.

Me, too. I still got plenty of muscle memory left in me from being kicked in the nads from the last decade of Tennessee football. You never know how the ball is gonna bounce, but it sure looks like things are setting up for us to have great success in '16......new regimes in SCar, UGA, and Missouri....UF gotta find their QB and replace some key guys....TAM was a grease fire last year and have a new QB that got run off from Okla. Sure seems like it's setting up to be our time, all the pieces are about as in place as they can get.

"Trying to be skeptical" is a good way to put it. I'm right there with you.

Hey KB and McDad,
Give in to the Hype. Short story long, I went to float the Buffalo with my brother and two nephews. The canoe company we were using was right at a bridge, so I went to jump of it. So I'm up there and stepped over the rail and as I would stand up my calves would push me forward makings feel like I was about to slip and fall. My brother was talking trash so I asked him to join me. He walks up steps over and jumps in. Swims to the side walks up steps over and jumps in again. The whole time 5 or 6 local kids where steadily doing the same. Finally the van with the canoes was pulling up and and it was time to jump or not jump, so I jumped in and swam over, we loaded up and floated the Buffalo. I enjoyed the jump and the rest of the day, as it turned out I could have jumped several times from that bridge, but my apprehension of what bad could happen clouded my judgement and kept me starting my good time sooner than later.

The point is why wait to enjoy the season. Start to enjoy it today and it will last longer that if you wait until we are 15-0.

Talking about all that jumping reminds me.

Jump higher Vols.

I'm sure everyone except me saw these interview quotes from Coach Shoop like 25 years ago since Jimmy Hyams tweeted them tonight, but I thought I'd share them for those of you that forgot because they FARD me up!!! ;)

Shoop: `We’re very committed. We’re going to stop the run. Nobody will run the FB on the Orange Swarm. Nobody will run the FB on Tennessee.’

Shoop wants `11 men flying to the football like their hair is on fire. We’re going to come after the QB. Pressure makes the pipes burst.'

Shoop: `We’re very committed. We’re going to stop the run. Nobody will run the FB on the Orange Swarm. Nobody will run the FB on Tennessee.’

Shoop said juco DE Jonathan Kongbo has gone from 255 when he
signed to 280: `He may eat himself into playing inside (at tackle).’

Soon after Jimmy's tweet regarding Kongbo, Mr. KING Kongbo tweeted the following: "I'm telling yall I still move like a end"

We ready! GO VOLS!

put a defense on the field, that shuts down Bama and Florida....that will back up all the quote and sound bites

I have seen plenty of CEO's fired but I guess that would not be high level.

I never did speak to anything you've seen or haven't seen. I was simply telling you my preferred approach and the approach that most of my peers in business take. Maybe you shouldn't be so defensive. Especially given that you started us down this path.
