Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team week 12

I'm in middle TN and all the rain we've had all day today is on the way to Knoxville... I will be shocked if they are able to play tonight.

Irritating because I really felt we would sweep auburn and move into second place in the sec rankings... Now it's gonna be a fight for 3rd place between TN, UA, and KY.

Lightning in the area since 2 p.m. High winds blew a chair or box or something loose at the top of the stairs next to the Press Box, not sure what. The game has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

I really hate this. The team needs every win it can get. On the positive side it won't be a loss.

Standings through the top 6. TN can finish no worse than 6th and who knows - if they sweep Ole Miss and A&M can take one from Auburn, TN will finish 2nd. Florida should send a thank-you gift to TN.

Florida.........17-4
Auburn........15-5
Tennessee....14-6
Alabama......14-7
Kentucky......14-7
Missouri.......12-9

So basically we just have to match what UK and Bama does to get a bye?

As far as I know if all three win out, TN finishes a game ahead in the loss column and will be seeded no worse than 3rd. Alabama took 2 of 3 from UK so Alabama gets the 4th seed. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Three more games to play, though. TN has to win out.

I kind of like our odds. We close out with Ole Miss. Ky is at Miss State and Auburn hosts TAMU.

I can't find anything on the UT site about senior day over the weekend. No photos or videos. Does anybody have a link?

Why is this final game of the Auburn series not being made up? That makes no sense. Team are competing for positions in the SEC. What's the rules on this? All games should be played in my opinion no matter what.

It's like the SEC says oh well we just had a game rained out no big deal though because we're not even gonna make it up? :loco:.

I know both TN and AU have finals this week so I dunno if that made it impossible to reschedule being that both have a 3 game series this weekend and then the tournment starts the following Wednesday/Thursday.

They have done it for some non-televised midweek games in the past. But this is a nationally televised prime time game on the SEC network. I'm pretty sure that the SEC network has a lot of say on this matter, and fortunately or unfortunately the school administration likewise would rather have its game being broadcast live in front of national audience at the risk of having the game delayed/cancelled.

We can only hope that ESfreakin'PN does not have final say on when games are played. It was obvious a big storm was coming through--and therefore it was obvious that the game should have been scheduled for the afternoon to at least try and get it in. It was stupid, with auburn sitting around a hotel, not to do that--especially with forecasting and radar as good as it is now.

They don't, but they kind of do. If a game is scheduled fro TV, it can't be moved up earlier in the day without their approval.

As for today, moving a game to the afternoon on a weekday is a lot more difficult than doing it on a weekend. Most of the people that work the games, from ticket takers to ushers to the concessions and first aid workers all have "day" jobs that they can't just drop because a game was moved.

That has always been how it has worked in baseball and softball, this is nothing new. Rained out games are never made up. If a Friday or Saturday game is delayed, they will try to get it in over the weekend. But the SEC rule has always been that the games have to be played within the original three days.

That is why seeding and SEC standings are determined by winning percentage, to account for games that are cancelled due to weather.

I'm po'd they didn't play because awburn was ripe for a sweep. I think the league should have made an effort to play the game in the afternoon. I hope the SEC, in its eagerness to take money from espn, has not ceded too much power to those tv boobs--but of course TV usually calls the shots, which is why some football games start at noon or, occasionally, before noon, which is totally absurd. In the end, the league schedule, and getting games played, is more important than television.

Game could not be made up this week as both schools are in finals week. Not fair to ask Auburn student athletes to hang around town another day and cause even more turbulence to their finals studying and testing schedule. Can't make it up next week as SEC tournament starts on Wed.

Only thing that matters is finishing top 4 in the conference. That gets you a first round bye. If Bama and UK sweep this weekend, and Auburn wins 2 out of 3, UT needs to sweep to stay in the top 4. Bama plays UGA, UK plays Miss St, Auburn plays A&M.

In theory 2nd or 3rd is better than 4th only because it puts off any potential game vs UF to the championship, but regardless of where they finish the tournament as a whole is going to be a street brawl from teams 1-12. That's what makes that bye so valuable. Just about anyone can beat anyone in a one game scenario.

Ole Miss is no slouch. They have improved dramatically since last year. They've only been swept once this year, and that was vs Florida. But at least right now UT controls their own destiny for a first round bye.

The kids are students. Academics come first.

If Bama and KY both sweep then we have to sweep too. Should be an exciting finishing weekend.

Yes the only thing that will help us is a sweep. Kentucky is quite likely to sweep Miss St, Bama could lose one to Ga, Auburn and A&M, Ole Miss vs Tenn sweep gives us at least third maybe second. One loss were probably fifth no better than fourth.

I was looking for one as well. I think they should have done a story on our seniors for sure. When Dani Klupenger was covering the UT Sports, we used to have more featured stories/interviews/videos on the softball team/players. Now she's moved on to the NFL, the coverage on our softball program as a whole is severely lacking IMO. That's pretty disappointing/discouraging seeing that the softball program has carried the torch and been the de facto flagship Lady Vols sport for the past 10 yrs or so. I have not been impressed by a current softball beat writer at all to say the least, if we do happen to have one for the team.

I wish the series was in Knoxville. Ole Miss is no slouch. They are 36-17 (10-11 conference) and their coach has them turned around. TN can't afford a lapse.

I didn't know this was a rule. I thought like in most other sports canceled games had to be made up. Then again, LSU didn't make up a football game that was rained out this past season.

I think this is a silly rule if you ask me. All games are needed to determine SEC rankings heading into the SEC tournament. Of course, this could help some teams while hurt others. I know there are weekday games as well for all teams.

I guess I can see why this last game of the series against Auburn isn't being made up. Due to finals & really no day to use as a makeup but you say they wouldn't have made it up anyhow if it wasn't during that 3 day window. I think this is a rule that needs to be seriously looked into possibly changing.
