If Smith can win where he's been, he'll kill it where the talent lines up to play for u.
No worries Memphis. Money well spent.

Pretty awful, would've thought Memphis could've got someone better if they were willing to spend that kind of money.

I think it's a good hire but at the same time I think it shows where Memphis falls in the heirarchy of college basketball. No where near the elite program their fans think they are.

Exactly. They were all claiming how Marshall was an option if they were willing to spend the money, you can't convince me that if they could stomach $3m for Tubby they couldn't have come up with $4m for Marshall or Buzz...looks to me like those guys let Memphis know "no thanks".

He didn't win at KY?

He'll take Memphis places they've never been. Bump me when I'm proven wrong.

He didn't win enough to keep his job at Kentucky or Minnesota...

Well Memphis has been to the championship game, so you're saying he'll win a title at Memphis? I would bet a large amount of money against that if you can show me a bookie willing to take that bet.

He wasn't capable of the standards at UK and he was actually one of the better coaches Minnesota had in a long time. He's a good fit imo at smaller schools who dont expect a ton. Im not sure Memphis will appreciate him though.

I'm aware. It's around 2.25 mil. I'd rather have Smith at 3 than Barnes at 2.

I disagree but that's fine, Barnes has been the better coach the last ~5-7 years, not really any debating that.

I don't thinks it's a bad hire for Memphis, my stance is just that if you're gonna spend $3m what's $3.5 to get Buzz or $4m for Marshall, that would've been my same stance had we gave Barnes $3m...I thought $2.25m was high for him honestly.

That is assuming buzz or marshall were hirable at that

I doubt they were

There were quite a few people saying Marshall was intrigued by Memphis and it's one of the few schools he would leave for...but that the offer would have to be around $4m and his typical quirky requests. Buzz was linked to Tennessee, and another opening this year iirc, many national guys seem to think he would like out of the ACC, he would however be in the $3-$3.5m/year range.

Best guess is that the other two declined.

That's my point, like ziti said, Memphis isn't near the job their fans or many people think it is if Marshall and Buzz declined offers in those price ranges.

Being turned down my marshall isn't a slap in the face at all.

Buzz, maybe, but he is still very much in the initial stage of a new job and I respect coaches very much that don't jump around quickly after getting a new job

Marshall was a little too costly and it was said he figured he could just wait a couple years for a blue blood to open up. In the next few years its likely that UNC, UCLA, Indiana, Louisville, maybe Duke will open. He would be in the mix for all those. Marshall I thought we would make a big run at, and we did reach out to gauge his interest. The hangup with him wasn't the money it would take to get him, but that he doesn't have a buyout or offset clause at VT and he would want to keep it that way at his next job. Memphis athletic department was killed for allowing that contract to happen with Pastner, and had publicly said they wouldn't make that mistake again. Memphis would have been happy to pay him 3.5 a year, just not a guaranteed $25 million over 7 years with no buyout or offset clause if it didn't work out.

He didn't have an NIT at KY. It's KY. There are many nuts who don't think Cal wins enuf there.
Over-statement on his future, maybe.
Do think he'll do everything Cal did without the cheating.

Gofers may be wishing they had him back for long.
