Principle far outweighs objectivity.
I happen to be a man of principle as well. But I'm also pragmatic about things. I learned the serenity prayer a long time ago.
So how does it work exactly? One person has their life ruined and another doesnt? Just happenstance? Because you met up with the wrong cop? Is that what happened to the ones who were wrongly killed by cops, like Kelly Thomas, and Eric Garner?
Yes to all of the above. Attitude plays a good part of it (on both sides) as well as age and experience of the patrolman in question. As with most things that are judgmental, there are factors that cannot be foreseen nor predicted. You're going to meet *******s out there for certain. Other times, the patrolman knows it's not worth the hassle since the person was trying to do the right thing. (sleeping it off in the vehicle for example) Or having the person call a friend or a cab. And then you have those who start getting belligerent about the whole deal and ruin it for themselves.
The overwhelming point though is that cops do let things like this slide for a variety of different reasons. (and not just a nice rack either) Can I put a percentage on it? No, just like you can make the case "it always happens to non-cops."
