Is it the arm of Dobbs? I've been in Yankee prison and would like VN opinions and realistic expectations.

The passing game.
Some blame the receivers /Azzani, others blame the consistency of Dobbs.
Either way, most agree that the passing game is the weak link, one reason or the other.

Oh, I expect 10 wins or more.

Don't forget pass blocking. Also getting 1st downs to ice the game.

Jump higher Vols.

Fans assuming a better than 9-3 season. Now that would be very good year but this team is NOT an SEC championship caliber team yet and is certainly not a NC contender.

And I am assuming Dobbs stays healthy which I feel is a rash assumption.

I prefer wildasmink's perspective better.

You really believe the team returning this year isn't ready for more than 9 wins?
Ready or there "yet" is no longer an issue. There always has to be some luck with injuries or the benefit of close ref calls but as far as the team, If these guys aren't there, we're not gonna be in the near future.

We are still on the way up. We have probably two years after this year before I see us level off.

Based on how the season played out, we should've been 10-2 LAST year. We return the most starters in the East. We are only one of 2 teams in the SEC (along with OleMiss) who knows who their starting QB is. Both Georgia and SCar have new coaching staffs and TAM is a mess. We don't have a difficult OOC opponent this year, there's no Oklahoma or Oregon, so that should be an extra win. We also get both Florida and Bama at home. It all sets up. Why in the world would any reasonable fan, in year 4 of Butch's regime, NOT expect AT LEAST 10-2 this season? It's beyond reasonable.

I guess we can chalk it up to opinions but I believe we will slip just a bit next year because of loss at skill positions. I do believe we will be ok but considering the talent we will lose, I strongly disagree that 2017 will be "up" from 2016.

Truth is, we play Bama every year and as long as Saban is there, no easy road to the playoffs but this year, the chances are as good as they will most likely be.
If we don't top 9 wins (barring some catastrophe, injury bug or injustice) it will definitely put doubt in my mind for the future.

Other than GA, this team has not shown they can beat teams like 'Bama or FL. And neither will be worse next year. So that leaves only 1 game more that Butch will choke over and lose. So this team AT BEST will be 9-3.

Well last year was our 4th quarter and 4th down defense. I think with Shoop on board we will not see any meltdowns there. I'm going to have to say WR until Azzani shows he can develop guys. Hopefully we will be running it down other teams throats enough to where the passing game doesn't have to great. I saw something posted on ESPN the other day that Dobbs didn't hit the 200 yard mark the last 4 games. Pretty useless stat because we won all 4 games. So Dobbs is the least of our worries.

So you believe Jones is the issue but you say that we're not there yet?
I hope some part of you realizes how absurd that line of thinking is. If CBJ is the reason then there is no "yet".
