In what book do the stories start to diverge from the show? I read the first book and it was basically the word for word script of the first season.

They stay fairly true to the overall story arc but make omissions and additions along the way to both characters and plotlines. The also screw around with timelines; certain events that happen later in the book happen much earlier in the show.

The compression become more noticeable after the 2 season; yet, with so many moving parts, it's masterfully done. I can only recall a couple of hiccups that left me scratching my head.

I'm halfway through the 4th book right now. I love them, really adds a lot to watching the shows.

Good luck with the rest of book 4. It took me about 3 months to read it. Then I got through book 5 in about a week and a half.

4th one is a lot slower than the others have been. The second half of the third book set a high bar.

There is no doubt Snow is back. You can see him in a battle scene. Also, Sansa makes it, so that was nice to know. I can't wait for this.

I've seen some people claim he's the guy on horseback in one of the brief flashes, but that's complete assumption. not a whole lot there to be 100% sure it's Snow.

I didn't see Snow in a battle scene, but I think the fact they are showing his corpse tells me he doesn't stay dead.
