Why settle?

Butch came out swinging last night when his character came into question. I say call those making accusations onto the stand and question their real intent. There is going to be some character questions asked about those involved in this case. If UT didn't feel strong about their case, a settlement would have already been paid.

Settling essentially means that additional arrests/allegations (and it's a guarantee there will be more) will just continue to add to the perception that UT fosters a culture that promotes/does nothing to inhibit sexual assault and poor treatment of women, because in many people's eyes it's an admission of guilt. It will be a label that sticks and will continue to be brought up every single time a UT player so much as gets an underage drinking charge.

Fighting in court (and hopefully winning) will make the media and other attorneys far more reluctant to keep beating this drum.

If the university thinks it can win in court, then a few more weeks/months of bad press is ultimately worth it. Of course, winning doesn't automatically absolve the university of guilt in the public's eyes, but it diminishes the perception considerably IMO.

I have no idea what was done or if anything was done. If anything, it would have been something behind close doors. Nothing should be done, IMO. It wasn't an unwarranted assault in which multiple people attacked an unknowing victim. This was simply a fight. Between two college football players.

I know other posters have already mentioned this, but this happens ALL THE TIME. It's commonplace. Players fought in the locker room, in the training room, in the weight room, on the practice field, etc. ALL THE TIME. These things happen. I've personally seen it happen during my college football days. We are talking about a team of college-aged, testosterone-filled males who are playing a game that revolves around smashing into/hitting eachother. Fights are going to happen. Normally they are broken up and it's over. Ocassionally a player would have to run extra gassers after practice. That's it. All these people spouting off that Maggitt should be criminally charged or should have been kicked off the team have no clue. That's not how it works.

Response? Bruin? :)

Bruin, I don't think settlement will quite have the effect you think it will. The media will look at it as an admission of guilt, and there's a good chance those calling for heads to roll would be emboldened.

Could be wrong, who knows?

Here are those "protestors" that pushed some over the edge.

Taking this to court also has the benefit of buying the university/football team time. Chris Low said this probably wouldn't wrap up until 2018 if it goes to court. At that point it becomes a boring he said, she said court case (unlike Vandy's case that had video evidence and was on the local news every night in Nashville) and people will quickly lose interest.

Yea I agree.
My settle post need to stop. I wish we had done that at the first but it's too late now I agree

Wtf are you talking about?

I don't think 56 should be convicted. I don't even think he should have been punished but I think the fact he wasn't publicly is going to hurt cbj badly

You harp all over it and make it one of the cruxes of your know-it-all rants...that's what the f*** I'm talking about! :yu:
