CBJ allegedly tells Drae Bowles he 'betrayed the team'

Absolutely not. There's no context whatsoever. They made it read like a rape definitely happened, that Bowles came to her aid like a knight in shining armor, and Butch called him a traitor for doing so. There's zero chance that it happened that way IMO. Context and actual events of what happened are what's needed here.
This could be the case, but when the media get ahold of something like this then it will not go away until some sort of action is taken. Maybe him being fired is too far but something will come off it due to the matter it involves. Will be interesting

Drae is either lying now or lied to the police. Either way, he lied at one time.

I've always contended that he didn't tell the truth, he would have had to "betray the team" twice and it would have resulted in charges against at least Maggitt, who admits assaulting Bowles.

He just wanted to get out of Dodge. Keep his opportunity at UTC in front of him. That was before all of this with Jones...if that turns out to be true, what would you have done in Bowles' shoes?

...and it just hit ESPN with the editorial liberty taken to add that Butch said Bowles betrayed the team "for helping a sexual assault victim".

This is a train wreck.

But you don't believe good men can do bad things when star players are involved?

The history of sports is littered with stuff like this.

I hope CBJ did not do this, just like everyone else here, btw.

A bad thing would have been to not suspend AJ THEN let those guys beat his face in until he was taken to the hospital. I can judge by the actions that we know are facts including two different Bowles stories and he did not end up in the hospital and AJ was kicked off the team and suspended from all team activities.

Shut up and move on.

I'm with you.
You do realize until it's settled 1 way or another, the plaintiffs will release something new every so often, for no other reason than to hurt UT.
And every time they do, the same people will freak out all over again.
But if we cave, no reason it won't happen again in a few years.

Serious question: when was the last time, if ever, that such an allegation was made against a program when there wasn't a lot of fire causing the smoke? Duke Lacrosse is the ONLY time I recall. We are going to have to face some music. This program does not have a good future . . . if it has a future at all.

This is absurd and melodramatic. Florida State just settled a case that involved Jameis Winston who won the damn Heisman Trophy and a National Championship for them. Was there smoke and fire involved? Probably. Do they still have a future? Yeah, I think so.

Bruce Pearl was fired over having a recruit over to a backyard cookout. That's the precedent.

He was fired because he lied to the NCAA and they could prove it.

The attorneys can't prove Butch called Bowles a traitor unless the conversation was recorded. NCAA has nothing to do with this case.

Let's get the mega boosters to just pay all these people, compile an exit strategy and slowly back away.

Yes, that would have been smart, Bowles ends up in the hospital...no media people would have asked any questions about that? Right.

I just hope we don't cave in and settle. Make these litigants prove their case in a court of law. If the bad publicity hurts our football recruiting in the process, so be it.

Right. I mean, so far this sounds like an episode of Judge Judy. The ambulance chaser is working his local paper for a big payday. Anybody can make allegations. Some of them might be true but during CBJ's tenure he has immediately suspended football players if charges are brought until the legal process is completed. No slaps on the wrists or second chances. They are out of the program until they are cleared legally. The plaintiffs clearly have a huge burden of proof to prove that there is a complicit culture in the athletic program that promotes rape. CBJ might have said something in the heat of the moment. Football coaches do that. Hell, parents do that. My first reaction when one of my kids tells me bad news is usually not my most thought out response. I don't think that makes the UTK athletic program complicit with rape.

They're selling papers and getting Vandy payback the only way they can.

Maybe it went like this:

1 Boyles helped the girl
2 Boyles was assaulted for helping
3 Boyles felt bad about "betraying" his team mates and lied when deposed
4 Boyles then was treated poorly by the team and CBJ
5 Boyles decides to tell the truth once he considers the matter further and in the context of being assaulted, ostracized, and called a traitor by the coach
