Supreme Court Justice Scalia has passed away

The Senate, in Republican control, will not confirm anyone Obama nominates to the Supreme Court. You can count on that as fact.

It would be political suicide for them to surrender on this. The GOP base is already fractured and tired of them, they can't afford to let this happen if they have hopes of getting people out on Election Day.

Of course, the flip side is that you have people painting the GOP as obstructionist, which could turn off independents and possibly make a small difference in a few races in a year where the Senate could easily flip.

The fallout will be fascinating to watch.

Yep.

This just made this race going forward a lot more nastier.

I agree with you for a change. Obama and the media will demonize the Republicans into going along. The Senate wont stand up to him and slow it down.

Yeah, could you imagine McConnell standing up to the pressure from the left? Nah.

You also have people who are right of center and conservative, who will now vote for sure no matter who the Republican nominee is.

Anyone really think a trump appointee would differ from a Hillary appointee?

I think the one way the Republicans could possibly frame this and delay any appointments is by saying that Obama has gotten to appoint two Justices and no President should have the influence on the court to appoint 1/3rd of the court. Don't know if it would work but worth trying. Everything will depend on the Republican Senate leaders who are mostly statists.

If Obama or Hilary get to appoint the next justice you can kiss the 2nd Amendment goodbye. Convention of the States would have to go into overdrive.

The old "it's not fair" argument?

A Cruz, Trump or Hillary nominee would be tolerable. A Sanders nominee would be a disaster.

This is a scary time. If Obama gets to make another appointment then they will finally be able to come after guns.

It would be interesting to see if Sanders wins in November, how quickly the GOP decides to vote in whoever Obama wants before February
