As a former D1 baseball player I am Certain you didn't make your school of choice as soon as these kids

I think it's completely "wrong" to committ on this timeframe

Do you think it's healthy for the game to have kids commit before that even have played a single game at the hs level?

I actually didn't address the morality or sensical nature of it Bruin. I addressed why it happens, or attempted to. Does it make sense if it was me or the young man is my child - not really. However, there are differing schools of thought. If those kids are as good as they appear they are likely to be drafted high enough out of HS with enough money offered to never go there anyway if they are not academics centered. I was and am more academics centered. Add in that personal and school situations change in every regard at that age. However, their desire to play for Vandy is real if they stay on that path. The families and kids know from youth leagues, camps, other older players, personal observations of the program, etc. that going to Vandy improves their stock with the scouts.

As a real example, our good friends' grandson that lives in Nashville has been playing on traveling youth league teams for years and is entering HS this coming school year. It is a year round pursuit of training even in the off season. He shows no signs of burning out and is very talented with a good bat. If offered by Vandy he would commit today and his parents would be thrilled. He's not your normal 14-15 year old. He is intelligent, has good character, and has worked hard for the opportunity. If offered by any other program he would not accept early. He could change his mind or Vandy could withdraw the offer as he matures, but it would give him nearly guaranteed playing time in HS and with the youth leagues because of Vandy's offer.

Hope this makes sense.

Someone who follows it more closely can probably expound on this subject much better than I can but my impression is that its difficult to recruit kids to play small ball. The brand of ball Serrano plays may actually work here if we could get enough traction and make it into the tourney. So far, it hasn't allowed him to even get to that point.

It really is this simple. The SEC and many teams in the southeast and southwest recruit and play a more balanced approach that enables them to generate more runs. Small ball tends to be lower scoring, strong pitching, excellent defense. The talent issue is in play. With the ability to take kids to the pros out of HS, you lose valuable recruits so often. You need guys with some pop in their bats that may not be the best defensively to cover for it. Small ball can work, but with quality pitching in such high demand the pros are going to take many of your recruits before they even hit the campus.

Looking good.

'99 was stacked.

Absolutely agree! Just being optimistic for our defense this season. If 2016 defense turns out better than 1999, I think we have a VERY good chance to celebrate with a bunch of hardware when it's all said and done.

You're right, I know plenty of Protestants who don't have any hang ups about beer.

Just don't let any of their friends or neighbors know I told you that though :post-4-1090547912:

If you go fishing with a Baptist, be sure to take two...otherwise he will drink all your beer.

Good grief Sports Court?! Seriously? I watched that video and they talk about the players as if they have already been convicted in a criminal trial and UT just let them freely walk around with no punishment whatsoever. They never played again. Their name has been drug through the mud. They haven't even been found guilty in a criminal trial yet!! I just wish the media would maybe add that little tidbit before automatically rushing to convict these guys.

Not sure how many care here but I thought it was worth sharing.

When comparing the different sports in recruiting it's amazing the difference and wow what a very very steep mountain our vols have to climb with this in their back yard

Vandy got 3 top 40 players in the country commitments in 1 day yesterday in Baseball. That's amazing it itself but probably not surprising until you learn the class of those kids.

2019.

Hard to believe for me.

Baseball is a different animal. Vandy doesn't have to compete with a sales pitch about bigger fanbase, facilities, etc in baseball. It's all pretty similar around country and at end of the day baseball players don't care about that stuff. They care about coaches and the field and the atmosphere. Vandy has an Elite Coach, beautiful field in baseball and Nashville is a great city.

Complete agreement I was just comparing timeline of recruiting more than anything.

We have zero commits for 2017 in football and they just got 3 on one day for 2019 in baseball

The contrast in timing is shocking to me

Off season trivia:

WITHOUT LOOKING, can you name the player who recovered the onside kick at the end of the NCG against Florida State?
