That a way to reduce the world to a simplistic narrative! I'll give you credit for this though: you at least took longer than 140 characters to make the world we actually live in look like a nice, neat linear and coherent narrative. Helps us feel like the world isn't as chaotic as it really is. I appreciate the security blanket you have offered all of us on here. I feel refreshed, because I can now fake solve newly simplified problems, like the conflict of Western and Islamic societies. And here I was previously under the false assumption that reducing everyone and everything to a vastly over-generalized statement couldn't solve anything! Thanks!

Well the thing is it's not going to change. The Republican Party can't get out of their own way long enough to come up with a viable candidate. The right wing American Public is enamoured by Trump and he won't win. Ted Cruz was born in Canada and after all the uproar people gave Obama about not being born in America it will be interesting to see how that is spun (yes I know he's a US Citizen, not doubting hat at all) the only thing the Dems got going for them is Hillary is a big name and Bernie Sanders is someone people relate to. Our political system is so f'd up and until we get rid of career DC politicians it's going to stay that way. All these people want to do is avoid questions and talk bad about their opponents. No one wants to really work with "the other side" and neither side will ever support the other.

Some people need to see things in a good vs. evil, us vs. them, black vs. white perfect little fairy tale to make sense of the world. It makes them feel better because it's easy. Understanding the complexities, the gray areas, all the factors- and trying to draw conclusions and come up with reasonable solutions? That's hard. Far too hard for the majority of lazy thinkers who find it easier just to give in to their basal notions.

Doesn't change the fact that he embraced islam as a means of getting out of going to Vietnam. I like the guy personally, but he did what he did.

Has he ever said that the murderous thugs that claim islam are not going to paradise because of their acts? I honestly do not know, but he is a high profile representative of the "religion" that could stand for something, and maybe make a difference.

Are you referring to Clay/Ali? If so, you have no idea what you are talking about. Ali was drafted, went to an induction service, refused to step forward when his name was called, and was later convicted, and sentenced to 5 years in prison and fined $10,000 for refusing the draft. He was also banned from boxing for 3 years. This is why he is singled out. I remember it very well .

I, and millions of college students like me, were in school, not called up, did not refuse induction, and were never charged with anything. There is a difference.

There is no difference from my point of view. I don't care about legality, I care about right and wrong. Ali refused to give up his liberty and told the government to **** off. I admire that.

Affluent people had a legal loophole. What am I supposed to admire about that? I don't fault them for using it, but they had the good fortune to not have to take a stance. Ali took a stance, and the peanut gallery still gets off on judging him. Hey, if you can rub one out to righteous indignation, be my guest.

If you don't have the right to choose whether you enlist or not, you do not live in a free country and your government is not worthy of your service.

I took no stance on Ali one way or the other. I didn't say that he was right or wrong. I just pointed out that he broke the law at that time.
All that I am saying is that pursuing a college education was not considered breaking the law at that time, and does not make one a draft dodger. I sure as Hell didn't want to go, and I don't blame any man for pulling whatever strings he had to pull.

Did going to school allow you to dodge the draft? Yes? Then that would technically make you a draft dodger.

You just did it legally.

If that makes you think you win the argument, fine. I went to college because it was expected of me, and I had good grades and entrance test scores. I never considered the draft one way or the other in my decision to go to college in 1967, however I certainly didn't want to drop out and volunteer once I got there.

I know 5 people on that wall in Washington D.C. I fully understand what those years were like. You don't.
