And how long would it take to make the offense better practicing against his defense, if that's gonna happen?

Hopefully, he will force them to stay on the field longer.

Fair question, not only in scrimmage situations but putting the offense in a better position during the game. Field position is so critical to play calling. Keep the offense on the field and a short distance to the end zone!

I don't know how much it will help in practice but an additional 10-15 sacks a year and increased turnovers will give the offense better field position and more possessions. That should help the offense.

Along with one of the best punters in college football. Going to be nice next year!

Agree, going against a top rated defense all spring and fall practice will help quite a bit. I hope CBS throws everything at the offense. It will have to make them better.....

When Jancek was let go and when this hire was made, I kinda wondered if some of it was related to the offense. Perhaps some of the conservatism this year was driven by lack of confidence in the Defense.

The offense will have more opportunities with the ball if the defense is getting stops. A defense that is sound in fundamentals will challenge their offensive counterpart in practice to be their best and use sound fundamentals. Also defensive stops in games tend to create energy on the field. That can get the offense going to go out and compete at a higher level.

Not trying to change the subject but I think another valid question would be, how much Larry Scott helps our offense?

Vollygirl, you had me wondering with the title, but I knew you know your stuff. I have no doubt the improvement will happen.

In practice sessions, especially during spring, the offense and defense will do everything they can to challenge each other. With improving the defensive scheme, the offensive coaches and players will be forced to compensate.

The O&W game should give us some indication of progression. Since Butch Jones first got here, we have seem improvement in a lot of fundamental skills, in some ways instantaneous but in most the improvements have been gradual and steady.

But the biggest way to improve is through recruiting and player development. I think Stoops will be a huge plus in closing this class to bring in a few more pieces to build a championship caliber squad. And as Stoops refines the scheme, I suspect he will also have a hand in spotting areas where individual players need to improve.

In closing, an this may be off the topic a bit, but I am very pumped today that Jalen Reeves-Maybin decided to stay. I am going on record that of all the Vols players I have admired over the years, this one has impressed me as much as anyone, both on and off the field. Having his leadership one more year will not only be key to our defense, but in improving the offense as well

He will have his hands full. The only proven TE is Ethan Wolf. With Croom moving to TE, 2 new ones hopefully coming in, and a handful of unproven guys, I am hoping Wolf improves and these others step up.

Since at least by job title I am guessing Scott, unlike Elder, is not special team coordinator and ST will be more of a by committee approach, that may give him more time to focus on developing that position group. Not much maybe, but every little bit helps.

Did we get Stoops from Oklahoma? Stoops probably came here so Dormandy would stay.

Come on TNnative...

Adding a really good coach to any team will be a positive move for the entire team.
Hope to see everyone in Atlanta.

The main thing is, having a solid D gives the ball back to the offense that many more times per game. That can be all the difference in the world. In the OU, UF, ARK, and Bama game...take 2-3 possessions away from their offense and instead give our offense 2-3 more possessions in the game, and how do you think it would turn out?

OU's defense held up when both team's offenses were sputtering. Our D cracked first because Jancek had a real problem leaving our starters in the game practically the whole game. He had the depth to rest them properly, but chose not to.

If Shoop not only provides an upgrade in terms of X's and O's, but in developing and using the depth behind our starters, then this defense will certainly impact the game by keeping the opposing offense from getting into a rhythm and giving our offense more time and opportunities to do so, themselves.

This is like asking does the offense with the hiring of Larry Scott make the defense better.

To me it is the position coaches who teach the players that make them better. In my opinion what makes a team better at beating an opponent is how well they prepare for the other teams offense and defense. And I would think that would come down to how well the scout teams are able to simulate the other team along with the plan of attack from the coaches on both sides of the ball.

I do hope Shoop pans out as well as everyone thinks - but this crowning him like he is the second coming is just insane.

Team 120 was going to be a very good team even before the coaching changes. Adding two coaches who are very good at teaching the players fundamentals will definitely make the players better. And that should result with better execution during the game and that was just as much a problem in the losses last year as anything else.

Say wut? Who's crowning anybody? I read the thread that Shoop is an upgrade, and by all metrics he is. This should translate to the field. Nobody is crowning Shoop but the overwhelming opine is that he is a more capable DC. Brick building.

The whole "iron sharpens iron" thing is what I was thinking about. When Shoop mentioned improving technique, it made me think about the offense and one-on-one match ups in practice.
