Just checked NCAA records, UT is ranked 16th in the nation in scoring defense, Penn State is 26th, so not clear if their DC would be an upgrade. We didn't hold the other teams well early in the season, but seemed to get better later, however, that may be partly due to not playing very good offenses. Just hope we get someone who can continue the improvement, concerned many of the good ones have already made a move.

PSU's offense was pitiful though. Their defense was left out to dry in almost every game.

Risky move in my opinion. I'm never a fan of shaking things up when all is going well.. I think there was some conflict between CBJ and Jancek that we aren't aware of. We'll see what kind of hire Butch makes and won't really know if it was a good move until this time next year.

I hope this did not result from a pow wow over improvements turned into the two defending a handful of screw-ups, with the situation getting hot and the HC dominating the end of discussion with a dismissal.

I was thinking the same thing. Right when Jancek gets some SEC talent to coach up, he gets our D was firing on all cylinders. IMO I thought that Jancek has our D going in the right direction. I really don't understand this move at all. We finally start getting some stability in the coaching staff, and then we start losing coaches. I thought Jancek proved himself this season, he had our D flying around and being very physical, especially in the bowl game. You just never know what's going on behind closed doors. IMO this was a bad time to fire a coach.

This is not a good way to assess the merits of a defensive coordinator.

Don't know what it's worth but JAV on TOS was saying last night that Butch is all in on Shoop, but if it doesn't work out Chizik is drooling to come here. JAV said Butch was pressing Hart hard for Shoop though. LITERALLY said Shoop was his man.

So do we wait until Alabama selects its new DC before we go after the next best guy?

We seem to never beat Alabama at anything these days.

However that's largely a symbolic position at Bama because in reality the Bama DC has always been Saban. Which is why it remains to be seen if Smart was a good hire for UGA - if he was Saban's puppet he may have gotten credit for defenses that in reality all should have gone to Saban (as if though he does not get enough credit already).
