"Running up the score"

Not exactly hilarious, but it was mildly amusing.
Old rule of thumb for comics: Never preface a joke, anecdote, etc. with "This is hilarious".

That is a funny story. But any coach that whines about getting scored on early and often should work on his defense and get better players if he doesn't want that to happen. "Let's go out there and hang half a hundred on them" Barry Switzer circa 1976 or so.

Switzer used to get accused of RUTS all of the time. He never did. He just wouldn't tell his backups not to go out there and do their best.

There's a story in his autobiography about a game Oklahoma played against Colorado and his old boss Chuck Fairbanks in 1980. Colorado was bad and Oklahoma scored at will. Fairbanks finally sent a message to Switzer to just give the ball to his fullback on every play, and Switzer actually did it, stopping the massacre from getting any worse than it was (82-42).

Switzer was no different than Tom Osborne in how he handled mismatches. But somehow, Switzer got a reputation for RUTS and Osborne didn't.

One of the announcers today went well out of his way to say he didn't agree with Tennessee throwing the ball around and running up the score with the game in hand (I think there was about 3-5 min left in the 4th).

I'm sorry but Dormady busts his ass way too hard in practice to come in when the game is over and hand it off 3 times. Also, the same announcer made the comment "why don't you work the back ups in earlier in the game (before its essentially over)." Well, dumb*** you answered your own question. The game isn't over and we need our best players on the field to ensure we win. The other announcer totally got this concept and I really think I could hear him making a "pffft (can you believe this guy)" type sound under his breath while the other idiot was blabbing.

Rant over.

Dude it was 7mins left in the game....and one did say that the other said hey he's getting good meaningful snaps not just mop up duty. Bottom line is if there 1st string can't stop our 2nd and 3rd string then that there problem. We only had 38 points not like it was in the 50s

Silly. Keeping your starters in with the game is over is dumb (I cringed with every touch McCaffery had last night when they were up 5 TDs). But running your offense with your backups is just common sense

I cringed too. He has the inside track to the Heisman next year if he doesn't get hurt. But their offensive line is all seniors (I think I saw that during the game) so they will have a totally rebuilt OL next year.

As Lou Holtz once told a whiny opposing coach who was complaining about him running up the score "I can only coach one team. "

And as someone else said "if you don't want me to score, stop me "

Started to put this in the thread about the running up the score, but it's too funny to not share with everyone.

For all the run up the score (with backups!) whiners:

Two friends of mine coached a junior varsity team and found themselves up 35-0 in the third quarter in the last game of the season.

They began subbing 2nd and even 3rd stringers. During a timeout in the 4th quarter, the backup QB says "Coach, we've practiced hard all season. Please, please let us try to score." So the coach relents and calls a pass play.

The QB hits the 3rd string WR (who is a GIRL, btw) on a slant and she takes it about 40 yards to inside the 5. They call a couple running plays and score. The opposing coach is livid.

After the game the opposing coach is yelling and pointing out our coach. Cursing and talking about running up the score.

Our coach calmly replies:

"That was my backup QB that threw the pass. That was a girl that caught it. If I couldn't stop that, I'd quit coaching."

The other coach walked away and didn't say another word.

I didn't know Jim Donnan was coaching JV ball.

Remember scrimmaging the Powell High School girls soccer team when I was in middle school (7th grade....), was like 11-0 in about 20 minutes, their players and coach acted the same way.

I think they were talking about this during the Stanford/Iowa game. I think it was Jesse Palmer that said if you don't want us to score, stop us

Yeah the guy that was complaining said if you want the backups to get meaningful snaps then play them when the game is meaningful, I couldn't help but laugh, I mean he played football who in their right mind puts the backups in when the game is on the line. The other announcer totally disagreed with them saying they are taught to run the offense.

I believe he is the one that kept comparing Hurd to Marcus Allen cause Allen ran over him in the league the Gruden said Hurd reminded him of Eddie George and he was like this is the first ive heard of that it makes sense, he is taller and bigger than Marcus Allen. Last year Eddie George even Tweeted about Hurd I mean the guy is clueless.

Lol, what he said made no sense at all. You could tell Mark wasn't going to argue with him because he couldn't find a way to respond to his gibberish

Announcers were Mark Jones and Rod Gilmore. Not sure which one was so adamant about kneeling down every play. The did not agree on how to use the backups though.

It was Gilmore. He is horrible. I told my wife before the game started that it sucked he was doing our game.

Yup, I laughed at his comment.

I did too. But the other commentator said he didn't agree, because the 2 & 3rd string kids deserve to play hard and score, because they practice their butts of to all season. Which I agree with. If it would have been Bama or Ohio st running up the score, it would have never been mentioned.

It's our job to score and it's their job to stop us from scoring. If they can't stop us then it is on them.

"If you don't want us to score, stop us."-- tOBC

No way EB should have taken a knee. He should take it to the house any time he can.

No team should ever stop trying to score. Ever. Even if Alabama or Florida is doing it to us. Taking starters out is respectable.

Asking guys to not try hard is disrespectful to those players and the game itself.

That's why I never hated Spurrier. His philosophy was that they were going to try to score until the clock ran out. I respect that.

Phil and Butch like to take their foot off the gas usually. It is dumb and gets you beat.

Hopefully Butch has learned his lesson and will stomp teams next year.
