Is he too hard on players? An article published before the 13-14 season claims Barnes is a lot tougher coach than many of us thought.

"It also costs us on the court, where in recent seasons players look afraid to make a mistake and do not look like they're having any fun out there. It can be a fine line between drilling young players so they can develop and drilling them so hard that you hold them back, "

Thought we might get some good heated discussions from this article.

Not at all what I expected to read from an AAU coach.

"Barnes has himself a really strong staff of assistants, especially with Jai there now. But he's an A..hole, man, and everyone knows it. It used to be that his style wasn't for everybody, and that was alright -- the kids who went to play for Rick wanted to work, but knew they'd get tough love. That's not the perception right now. A lot of people can't stand the guy."

Not the impression we have of the guy here

Thought the quote about the players being afraid to make mistakes might relate to Stella some.

One thing about . If he does get back to the rebuilding phase after the tear down, he'll have some tough muthers on the other side.
Hoping he can bring the beast in Ray.
Also found another article that he isn't a stranger to attrition because of the tough approach. Lost 4 out of 6 to transfer in the 11-12 Kabongo class.

Very true but with that said coaches must evolve

Finding the right balance is a special skill to have. You can no longer go all Bobby Knight on this softer generation. On the other hand, they'll take advantage of soft leaders and never accomplish a thing. I wonder if Coach K has mellowed out at all or if he's the same as he's always been.

Think it's one reason there are so many transfers these days.
Kids searching for a coach that fits their pain threshold.

Calipari seems to be tough on his players also, but he gets results. Maybe it all amounts to what the players get out of a program. Results matter.

That's honestly my take on it. Ricks way of doing things is outdated, and that's going to hurt us bad, imo.

I heard he rarely says much! He doesnt do much fussing! Some days he may drill them but he doesn't go overboard with fussing. He does like to say funny things about the players. I was told that TYNDALL was worse!

He almost has to be. Last year somebody had a turnover in front of him (might have been Richardson), Tyndall jumps up and starts screaming at the player... calling him a Mother ****er. It might have actually been "You stupid MFer!!!".

This generation of players/young people being "entitled" to everything is ridiculous! Too hard on them, give me a break. If their basketball coach makes them cry and hurts there feelings i would love to see how long they would last in bootcamp. Society and its, "everyone gets a trophy" mentality is out of control. I am so sick of this, if i cant have it my way then i am going home, or im going to protest until I get wheat i want. Just makes me sick.

Sorry i will get off my soap box now but felt like it needed to be said!

Then: When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Now: When the going gets tough, the players quit.

Sad but true. When I played, if a coach didn't get in your grill routinely, you weren't worth the effort. They'd spend the time and energy on players they were counting on and had talent to bring out. Some couldn't handle it and moved on. Some in today's generation need egos stroked and have never had to really fight for anything. When they move up to this level, they're facing players as good or better. When a coach doesn't build the program around them or is critical, their egos simply can't handle it. Get better or move on.

Yes he was much worse. Said crazy stuff to players. Saw it and heard it myself.

All people are different. What motivates one doesn't work on another. Funny though... if that approach is taken, then somebody isn't being treated equally and gets bent out of shape over that.

This generation's bunch of damn Nancy boys better stay off of my lawn!
