I use Sling and I have basic cable. I live in rural area with poor antenna reception, but basic cable is really cheap when bundled with internet. Basic has all local channels.

Basic with internet is about 75 including taxes, then 27 for Sling, 10 for Netflix, 8 for Prime. Total = 120

Old Cable package with less channels and no HD was 160 including internet. So I save 40 a month plus Sling is in HD.

Plus I get WatchESPN with both Sling and cable.

Another bonus, the filter my cable company uses for basic does not filter local HD channels. The filter for my old package filtered all HD channels.

Many cable companies offer basic cable but have very few basic subscribers. Thus they do not stock many basic filters. Often when you subscribe to basic, you will receive more channels than they list in their guides and often those channels will be in HD. You still only pay for basic. This has happened to me with two different cable providers in two different areas.

They could always come back and apply the filters, but many companies choose not to purchase the filters since basic subscribers make up a small market.

I prefer dish. You get more for your money IMO. Other than high speed Internet not sure why you'd want cable.

I need your help Volnation. I have a cousin that I grew up with more like a sister. Since a toddler, she's had heart issues that were congenital. She's battled through numerous open heart surgeries and has artificial valves throughout her heart. This heart has lasted her through 52 years. She's gotten about everything she can from this heart. She's been on the heart transplant list for some time but was at a low priority. She's been recently moved to the most urgent priority as her condition has deteriorated to critical. She's currently at the Cleveland clinic. She's gained twenty pounds in water weight over the last few days and the medications have been limited in their effectiveness.

She's a very faithful person and has never asked for prayers for healing but for God's will to take place. Please pray for Lisa and her adopted daughter and husband.

I haven't read the last couple pages, so this is maybe a super stupid post. After years of cable (insight, Comcast, time warner) I switched to Dish a little over a year ago. Could not be happier. Amazing DVR, super amazing remote (cannot emphasize enough how awesome the remote is). Great picture. Great price, that has only increased as promised. Only gone out for maybe 4 minutes total during that time (that we were watching). They often have free premium channel previews, and when they do, I DVR a bunch of movies. The DVR is huge, and you can connect an external hard drive, should you run out of space.

Thanks everyone for their prayers. They seem to be working! They were going to do dialysis to try to remove some of the fluid but her kidney function has improved enough for them to back off on that. Also her sodium levels have improved. Still critical but appears to be stable now. Drs have told the family to prepare for a lengthy stay, perhaps until she gets a new heart.

Your continued prayers are appreciated.

Fees. When I was making the decision to switch Directs fees were ridiculous. How many TVs will you have, and how many DVR's? Make sure you read the fine print. With the 2 year price lock from Dish, they give you the price per month for 2 years locked in, and it's $7/mo per extra tv. (1st one is included.) It's whole home DVR. Plus a year of Netflix free.

Dish isn't cheap. $130 per month for us
