Wouldn't surprise me if Trump is working on the behest of the Clintons. I know, far fetched but they do have ties.
It seems to me like the progressive left considers the Obama presidency a failure, or at the very least a missed opportunity. I'm not sure I'd classify him as "far left", although I suppose it does look like it from the right's perspective.
The Democrats tried to elect a far left candidate in 1972 in McGovern, and it backfired miserably.
I guess Reagan is the most right-wing President since before the Depression? Politicians as magnetizing as him don't come around very often.
Take a good look at Reagan's record. He governed as a moderate, not right wing.
McGovern was far left and Barry Goldwater was far right and both had embarrassing loses.
I agree, but is there anyone who was further right? Eisenhower was more of a uniting force than a partisan. Nixon may as well have been a Democrat. The Bushes weren't particularly right-wing. Bush Jr. and Reagan were definitely not small-government. I think the reason Reagan is so idolized is not because of what he did, but that he's the only Republican president in recent memory to annihilate his competition and also be loved by the majority.
Either way, I think the idea that a far right or left candidate stands a good chance isn't based in reality. America is so polarized now that a Cruz would put up a better fight than Goldwater did, but still...

Goldwater was very conservative, but the magnitude of his big loss was due to people not wanting to make a change so soon after the Kennedy assassination, and the nuclear destruction fear ad made by the Dems.Take a good look at Reagan's record. He governed as a moderate, not right wing.
