It's because they think we are their "rival". Poor Memphis, they suck so bad no one even wants to be their rival.
The fact that they hate us because of money issues is a testament to their idiocracy. I haven't seen them do anything proactive to try and remedy this situation. All they do is whine and bitch all the time like a five year old who didn't get his nap time. Grow up and freaking deal with it! Start doing something positive instead of blaming everyone else for your problems. Half of the people in that God forsaken city are lazy potheads and the other half are wannabe gangsters. No wonder a real educational institution wants nothing to do with you!
I've been casually reading Memphis message boards today.
Why all the extreme Vols hate from them? I don't get it...
Did I miss something? Whats the deal...? My mom and Dad, aunt and uncle all did undergrad at memphis State and graduate school at UT. I have never looked at this as a big rivalry for obvious reasons I guess.
Anyone have the inside scoop on the jealousy?
they've only beat us once in football....1996. i was there. a day that will go in infamy.1st....I'm a UT fan!
I went to a smaller state Univ in TN, I now work at a smaller state Univ in TN. Whenever Tech, AP, Mem, TSU, Martin, UTC, ETSU plays UT, they think it's a HUGE deal. Not out a envy, but UT is THE state Univ.
Memphis is the ONLY school in TN that can claim any +"s vs UT. Basketball only!!!!!!
These games better be a rivalry to UT fans...because what happens when UT loses to any of them??? It does not happen often, but how sad was it when Mem. won in football in 1997??? 1996??? When MTSU beat UT in the NIT in the late 80's? It's VERY rare, but how embarresed would it be to lose to any of them? That is what makes it a rivalry!

and that was embarrassing.
losing to Memphis in basketball, in most any year, is not embarrassing and even then it hasn't happened that often.
if we lose Saturday, not embarrassing. we lose to the #1 team at their place. hardly something to hang your head on.
i will say this though....in football, no one in orange wants to ever lose to Memphis. winning that game is an afterthought, even when it shouldn't be, a la 2005.
and for it to become a rivalry in basket ball, both teams are going to have to remain good so when they play its more than just a slot on the shedule.
more games like this one coming up Saturday night could do that. potentially it could turn in to a good series like the Lady Vols and Lady Huskies. but that only works if both teams are any good.
this is the first year they've both been anywhere near close to equal enough for it to really matter, in any sport (at least in my 35 years).

in basket ball, it makes more sense. in football, i'd alwasy rather play a cross sectional OOC game.I agree 100%!
My point is this....every SEC game is a "rivalry" .....a game that means alot and everyone wants to win. (I know you want to win every game) Is a game against a smaller state univ more important "fan" wise than a game vs. Cal, UCLA, Texas, ect....? I think it is. Memphis can and does compete with UT in basketball. It is a rivalry.
because they are the armpit of Tennessee. Pretty much the city we conveniently leave out when mentioning Tennessee's great places.
Memphis is just a city that will eventually self implode. With their crooked government and unemployed citizens, and ridiculous crime rate, it is hard to feel sorry for them.
