No christmas at ut

Starting to get pretty Gooberesque round here. We spent a month whining about the dumb kids at Missourii trying to get someone fired and now we're trying to fire Cheek...

I think most Tennessee fans want him fired bc they don't like cheek and think he represents the university poorly.... They grasp on to any reason they can find.... I have a big problem with all this PC stupidity.

I would say that most Christians attending Christmas parties would be very welcoming to people of any other religions, if those people wanted to attend and if they planned to be respectful of Christmas. Christians basically set aside the month of December to celebrate the birth of Christ. We don't tell any other group/religion that they can't celebrate whatever they want.

You can have gatherings celebrating anything. You can have a Dale Jr. party and invite all the Muslims, Hindus, Chinese, Buddhists, Protestants, Catholics, atheists, agnostics, not sures, etc. that you want.

The issue, as i see it, is the math department at ut throws a staff Christmas party. 74% of the staff is Christian and celebrates Christmas. The Christian attitude, as demonstrated in this thread, is screw the 26%, let them assimilate.

Why not just have a holiday party and make 100% of the staff feel welcome? The problem with the alternative is that you're likely to never know that Haji the Hindu didn't feel welcome at that school sponsored party. Would your life be enriched by including more people, cultures and experiences? I think so.

My opinion changes completely if the party is private and not school sponsored.

They already called them holiday parties....they wanted them to make sure they didn't do things like have secret Santa which unless u didn't know has absolutely non-Christian..... Christmas is already a generic holiday with both pagan and Christian customs.....most of the other people from different cultures that I know are not offended in the least if their company has a Christmas party.

Why are people so reticent to make others with differing views, upbringings, cultures etc feel welcome?
Yeah, pretty sure they told the mooslim to hit the bricks in San Bernadino. Are you just trolling or are you really this daft?

The one that got me was a school up north cancelled Halloween parties bc it was offensive to witches.... LMAO

There are individuals at higher institutions that take things like Wicken seriously. It's not about banning everything; it's about creating an atmosphere at a higher institution that completely accepts people from all perspectives.

I think that the true measure of success in life is your level of happiness. Having lived through the entire 50's and 60's, there is no way that I believe the general population's happiness has increased.

Were black people terribly unhappy then? Some were I'm sure, but the kids had a father in the home who worked, and a devoted mother not on drugs. A street gang didn't take the place of their family. One thing for sure is that it doesn't appear that they are that happy now. Happy folks don't shoot each other, burn stuff, riot,
and whine constantly.

Were the gays terribly unhappy then? Some were I'm sure, but a lot aren't terribly happy now either. They are self loathing liberals. Happy people don't whine constantly, and try to get people fired or businesses shut down.

So, before you condemn an era, it would help if you had done more than read about it in a book. People in the 50's and up to Vietnam era went to work, had a sense of self worth, didn't stay stoned or drugged, and didn't expect to walk to the mailbox to pick up their check. You are a smart guy, but not old enough to have an opinion about the years before you were born.

I know nothing about the Great Depression other than what I have read. in a book. I know nothing about the Roaring 20's , other than what I have read. I wouldn't pretend to pass judgment on people who lived then because I was not around. Feel free to tell me what it was like in 2010 or something.

You say this as though it applies to the majority of both groups now, which is categorically false.

I hate flinging this term around, but your post reeks of privilege.

He comes from a time when nagging inequities were swept under the rug, and hidden. You and I come from a time when we rush to correct one problem, regadless if it creates another..

You tell me which makes more sense.

I just don't see how his post can be interpreted in any other way than this:

If you are gay, stoned, or black, you're doing it wrong.

I have had older black people tell me that they liked the way things were BEFORE integration. Their words, not mine.
They had their own neighborhoods, associated with people like themselves, had their own schools, their own sports teams, and probably said what was on their minds without fear of upsetting the apple cart.

Yes, I'm sure that is the case. I grew up in the south and heard about how happy and well treated most of the slaves were and the civil war was just a war about states rights.

Thankfully, those Uncle Tom's won't be around much longer.

We are speaking of the 1950's, not the 1850's. And, we are talking about an area that had almost no slavery, and was mostly sympathetic to the Union. I can't speak about race relations in Mississippi or Alabama. I didn't grow up there.

Honestly, neither make the least sense to me. But I guess its easier to convince masses that its wrong to hate black people than it is to teach them the type of rational thought that reaches that same conclusion. Unfortunately, its been twisted into ' its wrong to hate black people, and we should destroy anyone suspected of that sentiment'.

I have had maybe 30 minutes to cool down and compose myself after your insults to my friends, so let me fill you in on something. Pete, Wayne, Louis, Marie, and Bobbie are all over 65, and are or were all good friends of mine, and way , way better people than you will ever be. I have cried with the wife and kids at the funeral of one of the "Uncle Toms" already, and 2 of the other "Uncle Toms" came to my brother's funeral this year.

You strike me as a conceited, arrogant, little smartass who thinks that he is the smartest guy in the room. You have apparently experimented with too many drugs and too much alcohol to have any respect for anyone. I would love to have you in front of me right now.

Edit: I don't want to forget Florence. I went to her funeral too. I guess she would be an Aunt Jemima to you. I am so damn mad and emotional over this. You don't have a friggen clue about growing up around black people before integration, playing Little League baseball against them, going fishing with them. You must think that we whipped them with a cat o' nine tails every day in the 50's and 60's. We played sports against them in leagues, but with them in our back yards.
