I'm really pleased about the game last night. We just flat out dominated Mizzou, controlled the line of scrimmage, and protected the football. Impressive effort. Next week should be a win, but because it's Vandy it'll probably be uncomfortably close. Go Vols.

I still contend the offensive play calling is about Dobbs and not a "philosophy". That missed pass to Smith. ughh

Oh, I know. That pass hurt so bad. I think you're right, too. People complain that we run too much or don't open up the playbook enough, but when you miss wide open receivers like that, it's hard to jump down the coaches' throats for the play calls.

When Dobbs is on he's on, but when he's not, it can get pretty bad. I love him and he's a great player, but it is frustrating to watch sometimes because you know how good he can be.

Probably Butch's fault. :)

I thinks it's more about OL inability to protect and Dobbs inability to protect the ball when hit.

He isn't careless with his throws at all. Very very odd for a below average accuracy thrower to have so few picks

That's because they don't often ask him to make throws he can't make. Half his completions come on easy swing and screen passes.

I love what Dobbs brings to the table but consistent downfield passing is not one of those things.

Not when you run it all the time or only pass it to high percentage plays. Dobbs has lucked out in the pick department too. He's had a half dozen bounce off or slide through defenders hands.

he throws everything hard as hell is one my main issues. I like Joshua but thats my main concern with him. The pass to Smith that he missed has happened several times this season. Just take off a little zip and put a little touch on it and they are easy TDs. He zipped it right over him and gave him zero chance. But as long as we are winning then im alright right now.

If you look at MI under Debord and Cincy under Butch you don't see the same issues we have. At least not to the same extent. We seem to be playing away from weaknesses. It is frustrating and it could be self fulfilling but it doesn't seem to be rooted in scheme.

Agree. My reason for bringing it up is to offer the perspective this is not solely driven by coaches desire to look like a turtle.

Some thoughts on the game:

1. Dobbs was 16-24 that's 67% passing no INT's. Take away 1 catchable incompletion and 1 bad WR route and he's something like 18-24 75% for around 130 and a TD or 2. That's really all you need when you get near 250 rushing in a game like that and prob all that was asked of him in the game plan. Solid night vs a solid D. The passing game has been much worse at times this year than it was last night and it obviously needs to be more productive going forward. But how much of it is actually Dobbs? How much of it is WR? Pass pro? Combination of all 3?

2. Red zone offense was really only 1 of 2 negatives I saw last night. Capitalize on that outstanding field position and punch a couple of TD's in there and that game becomes a 27-8 or 31-8 blow out. The other negative was calling designed QB runs on 3rd down in 2nd half a couple times. I'm good with that on 3rd and 5 or less, but on 3rd and long it's too much like conceding iyam.

3. That was a great job running the ball vs a really good D. And a great night for our D as well.

4. The field position component of special teams continues to be dominant and the best I ever remember seeing at UT.

5. All I can remember about last year's game vs MO was that I couldn't believe it was so close at the end after their DL manhandled our OL the whole game the way they did. Clear improvement last night.

The OL has shown significant improvement this year. But I agree that pass protection is an area where they can improve. Of course, when your QB can't hit WRs on the longer routes, it allows defenses to load the box and blitz.

Many of you may not like hearing this, but I think we need to wash, rinse, and repeat the offensive and defensive game plans for this Saturday. As long as we don't turn the ball over and give a short field to Vandy, I don't think they can move the ball the length of the field against our defense. I'm fully convinced that we can run the ball against anyone.

Yep. Vandy is even less likely to hit big plays and even more likely to turn the ball over than Mizzou. There is absolutely no reason to have a gameplan different from what we saw yesterday.

Heavy dose of Hurd, 6-7 rushes by Kamara and Dobbs each, and around 25 passes.

I also imagine that Butch will be eager to punt, as Vandy's return team is awful. There is a good chance we will force a turnover deep in their territory.

So should we be impressed with our season?

Impressed? Sure. Played a bunch of freshmen and sophomores and were competitive in every single game for the first time in I don't know how long.

I buy the explanation (purposeful choice of word over "excuse") that we just were a young team that didn't quite know how to win early in the season. Sure the coaches could have made a few different calls here or there, but they put us in a position to win every game. Players needed to execute.

The difference between 8-4 and 11-1 in the SEC usually isn't that much. A few breaks here or there. Florida got those breaks and we didn't.

Agree. As much as I'd like to see more passes to Wolf. Be great to get a defensive TD and a Punt return TD, too.

I saw yesterday that Eric McClain became the winningest player in Clemson history with 43 wins he played or started in. He is a really good guard for them and another in the long list of Dooley genius recruiting moves in cutting him loose. On top of it he was a lifelong Vol fan.

Week 9-11 Martin and Kirkland would have made a huge difference against OU and UF. Hell, even current Foreman would have made a difference.

Thankfully we will be in a position next year where we aren't waiting for newcomers to learn on the job at critical positions.

Against Vandy I just want a win. Whatever game plan gets us that is fine with me.

I can't wait to see our team in a bowl game after we've had time to rest and heal from injuries. I think we will roll, personally.

Agreed. It will be just like last year. Drawing a bowl opponent at 8-4 but with 10-2 or 11-1 talent. Very similar to Bama pummeling Michigan State in 2010 after going 9-3.

Totally agree. We get a couple TD's where we got FG's last night and it could end up a 31-0 type win for us. Liked the pistol option too. Held my breath on the pitch a time or two but seemed like it was good for at least 10-12 yds every time they called it.
