In hindsight, sure, but at the time, Brees wasn't the stud he turned out to be. And Culpepper almost won an MVP.

The truth is, they were both damaged goods...Culpepper had the devastating knee injury and Brees was coming off rotator cuff surgery, I believe.

But I was always confused as to why they rolled the dice on Culpepper...he got off the plane limping and he never seemed to improve. Culpepper failed the eyeball test from day 1 until his days at Miami were over.

I couldn't remember and was too lazy to research. Trading for Culpepper makes the decision even dumber, though, IMO.

The way Saban retells it, Brees was his guy and he was overruled on Culpepper. Thought he had final say when he was there also but I think this was an ownership thing...they wanted Central Florida's own.

Hmmmm interesting... I wonder if bama would go that route?

Following saban would add a lot of pressure to an already high pressure job.

I still don't know enough about CJM to think he would either do good or bad at Alabubba. But, initially I would want them to go another route. See them make a huge hiring mistake and set them back a while.

Going to be leaving at 7am from Roanoke. 4 hour drive. Parking downtown is easy and is a short walk to the stadium. Should get to my seats with about 20 minutes to spare. Nooners suck -- early morning and no tailgating.

Anything going on in Knoxville Saturday night that the gf and I might want to check out?

Do you park in a garage or lot? What about the KAT busses, good or avoid? Thanks in advance.

I always thought that Saban was all in on Brees and when ownership didn't make it happen he was ready to bolt.

I could have sworn he had final say...but I could be wrong.

But as a tortured Dolphin fan, you should let me revise history, especially if it means throwing criticisms at Saban. :)

Where do you guys set up?

We don't tailgate. But for the vol walk, often we are near where they get off the buses. Then we'll probably walk over to volunteer village and see if they have some cool stuff the kids might enjoy, then go grab something to eat near/on the strip before the game starts

I know this is understood but it hasn't been directly mentioned in the last 150 posts or something that I just read. When we beat North Texas this weekend, we will be going bowling. Last year at around this time we were 4-5 needing to beat 2/3 of SEC East leaders Missouri, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt. This year we have to beat 1/3 of North Texas, and SEC East bottom feeders Missouri and Vanderbilt.

We are still growing as a team, and we probably should have more wins, but this season to me is very acceptable. Back to back bowls for the first time in how long? A lot of players showed us they were or weren't capable so we will have a better feel who to play next year. A lot of true freshmen and young players who will play a lot moving forward got a lot of reps. Now we need to win out and blow out a P5 team in a bowl game like last year and finish this recruiting class strong. Also finish in the top 25. Next year we have to figure out how to cut down injuries in practice. We have to.

This season will get us out of some slumps if we win tomorrow. Earliest bowl clinch since 2007. Back to back bowls for the first time since 2009-2010, with a chance to win back to back bowls since 1995-1996. If we win out, including a bowl, it will be the first time we have won 6 in a row since 2003. CBJ will have 3 straight wins in a season at UT, so far he has only won 2 in a row, we haven't won 3 in a row since 2010. As long as we progress, we are on our way.

Encouraging news in the War Room. They said Boulware and Richmond have both embraced the redshirt, and that both have started to really improve in practice. They went as far as to say the left side is pretty much Richmond's the day after the bowl game.

I know I had read before that people on VQ were speculating Drew was unhappy, so I'm glad to see he is on track according Hubbs and Crew.

Add to that we had not won back to back SEC games iirc. Winning out would give us 5 SEC wins in a row.

Some of these measures of progress though.

Agree they are meh from a high level. They also leave questions about winning against top opponents. If you measure just from Bama on this is a good performance considering the injuries. I look at this season as 2 sides of a coin or 2 halves of a game. One side showed a need for improvement but improvement came. Thus far.

Beating all of the lesser teams was a need. Beating the top 2 in the conference/division was a want. We only failed with AR in that measure.

I still wouldn't be upset if he did

He isn't going anywhere CB. He's known CBJ since 1998 and been part of his staff ever since Jones became a head coach. His line blocked for a school record passer and rusher at Cincinnati. Our best offensive tackle going into last season was a walk on tackle, the talent was so bad at the position the same walk on played without an ACL for us last year. The Oline has actually played pretty well this season particularly the Bama game was impressive outside of the our last offensive play of the game. I feel the young players are developing pretty nicely at the position now that they have some talent there. With S&C and more depth I feel that will be a very good unit. No idea who gets the most credit though, Debord or Mahoney.
