They've got a real problem up there and addressing it sounds like a bigger deal than a football game or 2 of a losing season.

A university president isn't putting out a strong message against racist incidents on campus. Fire him or I ain't eating...football players: He ain't eating? I ain't playing. Spin the narrative...university president seen at a Republican convention? Kid doesn't like it and makes a stand...coach of a losing team gets brownie points while skipping games. This becomes a regular thing because people piss all over themselves trying to show how much they care. If you work for a butthole, find something crappy about him and refuse to work until he's fired...works until YOU get fired...then you find sane routes of protest. This situation needs lot of firings and lots of scholarship yanking. Then we'll see how important it is.

Absolutely. If he has compromised his position he should no longer be retained.

This thread is not running low on self righteousness either. A degree of cynicism toward the motives of the players involved should be expected and has even been expressed from within the team. A player not involved has said that this wouldn't be happening if the team was 9-0. I tend to agree.

You do realize that one of the Founding Fathers is being blasphemied right now by the same individuals protesting???? I think our Founding Fathers were smart enough to realize what was important to fight for and when they were simply being played.

But the entire team does NOT support the protest. I teach at a university. I do not have the right to suspend my classes just because a portion of the class is boycotting. I teach if there is 1 person attending my class.

The short answer to the problem is fix the culture in the black communities. The root of the problem dates back to the rise of the Black Panthers and other groups that wanted to reject everything that they saw as White America. That included their names, they way they dressed, and education.

It's a lot older than that. Slavery, Dred Scott v. Sandford, Plessy v. Ferguson and Jim Crow Laws. It wasn't until 1954 that SCOTUS held that intentionally segregated schools were unconstitutional. In many places, however, Jim Crow laws were in effect until 1965. It took us more than 300 years to admit that there was a problem and most on this board think its been completely rectified in 50 years.

Blaming it all on a black rights group that was formed in 1966 is pretty short sighted or intentionally dismissive of the history.

Your points are not invalid and, in fact are extremely relevant. Why do you think it is that way? Could it be that the average black child is born into a worse situation than the average white child? Could it be that the average level of education offered in predominately black neighborhoods is less than what than what the average white child receives? There is a systemic problem and we have to figure out how to solve it. Bussing wasn't the answer, but the problem continues to grow.

There have been studies done that show that when seeking employment black applicants need to be significantly more qualified than their white counterparts. I know this will start a whole crapstorm about AA, but if that is taken out of the equation (which it is in most job application settings) then a less qualified white male will garner more attention from prospective employers.

There was one particular study done where resumes, which were substantially the same, were given to prospective employers in response to an ad. The one difference was the name. One resume was "Becky Smith" and the other "LaShonda Roosevelt" (these aren't the names used in the study, but you get the idea). Becky was significantly more likely to get an interview than LaShonda. Whether you want to admit it or not racism still exists. It's not as blatant, but it is there.

Also, I know that when I get my masters and begin teaching, I wouldn't want to teach in a school where I was likely to get disrespected every day by my students and possibly get into a physical altercation with one because they did not respect the authority of the teacher.

In time, real topics will arise or fall. At this point, it seems to be a perception issue, expanded by innocent by-standers, which incorporates the media. "I" do not think that "you" did enough an "my" specific issue.

Simple example: teacher made the test too hard and I did not do well, like a few others. We should protest to have the teacher fired, even though I did not know the material. As a few peers that dislike the teacher and add the media, and you have a similar situation.

I have been to games for many years in multiple sections and have never heard anyone including opposing players called the N word. Any chance you were for example under dressed for lets say the Copper Cellar and that it had nothing to do with race? I sometimes believe that the race card is played too easily and too often - to the point where we now have white people pretending to be black just so they can join in.

As far as those things happening, many times directly behind our bench on a turnover. Numerous letters and voicemails. And I had on a white button down shirt on tucked in with blue church dress pants and some new blue suede shoes. Jabari had on a suit. And another guy with us had a three piece. We were attending something that night.

Before we had the video cameras on cell phones and racism was being brought out I have experienced some crazy stuff in Knoxville. I love love love Knoxville before I say what I am going to say. And the views and idiotic decisions of the small amount of people does not speak for the majority In Knoxville which are wonderful people. I say this because I can relate to the players. There is double standards sometimes in th south. I can't tell you how many times I have been called the n word by some fans at our own stadium, got horrible voicemails and notes from various people. We went to a high end restaraunt once and were not allowed in, of course until people recognized who we were, then they just so happened to have a table for us of the many empty tables. By "the same" what do you mean? Should be a little more cut and dry than an INTERPRETATION of his activities or lack thereof. Instead of demanding his instant firing maybe a round table discussion with teeth. As is, it's a "we don't like how you responded...we want you fired" kind of thing...Pandora's Box waiting to happen.
