Maybe VT but it not a better job than Maryland and its not even close. Maryland has Ore type money with elite recruits in their backyard. Maryland just hasn't hired the right guy. Ralp Refrigerator didn't have the UA money, the B1G or a staff of good recruiters. If you throw in academics it one of the top jobs available outside of SoCal. I would take Maryland over UM and SC.

What does SC have besides the SEC, a pretty good fanbase and The Brice?

They have their fair share of elite recruits in the Carolinas. But they get poached readily by other teams.

I would argue the Atlanta area is a better area to recruit than the DC area but it's close

spurrier had some a few good years at USC, but he lost it the last couple of years. Admit that he is an old washed up coach who in his prime was as good as any coach in the college ranks. His time was numbered by his age and attitude as he aged. Facts are facts and his record is fact for the last two years. He quit on his coaches, school, and players.I expected him to have more class than he has shown the last two years, but class has not been one of his strong points.

I have seen quite a few people rank SC third of those 3. With the UA founder wanting to turn Maryland into Oregon that could be a great job. VT has better tradition, albeit not very long, than South Carolina and their biggest competition to get into the ACC championship game are GA Tech and Duke. They could be a couple of games from the playoff every year.
South Carolina had to have a HOF coach to have a few good years. He also coincided with a once in a generation group of players that the state doesn't normally produce. You have to factor in that your biggest rival is now #1 in the nation in the playoff poll as well and are rolling in recruiting and are still a young team.
Your main recruiting area is GA and you are behind UGA, AU, Bama, Tennessee, Clemson, Ole Miss and a few other schools in recruiting that state. Not to mention FSU and UF getting some South GA kids. South Carolina is not a good job.

Atl is loaded so I would agree. Like Mia no school will ever lock down Atl but an elite staff in College Park could do work in DMV. Hell, Locksley alone does his damage.

Never been impressed with Maryland's football program or fanbase. Bobby Ross was the best coach I remember...with the most success...and he abandoned them for Georgia Tech. You'd figure a good to great program would have attracted a decent replacement...and they never have...why would that change now? :dunno:

Thursday prior to the Riverdale playoff game I sat down to dinner with an old friend who lives in East Tennessee. He happens to be a Bama fan. He came to the game to see Jr.

He asked about Gentry Bonds. Told him In all honesty, I have felt like Bonds has slipped a little this year and really hasn't been that impressive.

Bonds goes out and makes every tackle, has 2 great picks (breaks on the ball with serious closing speed), made huge hits, and made a great catch to put them in a good position to win with about a minute to play.

My friend looks at me and says "if Tennessee don't want him I'm sure Bama will. You are the worst evaluator of talent I've ever seen."

The kid was by far the best player on the field. He showed why he's a big time recruit.

Honestly, the ACC has been a lot better recently. I think if I were a young, talented coach who knew how to recruit, I might consider Minnesota. That conference is significantly easier than the ACC or SEC but still gets looked at as a power conference.

Have one season like Iowa is having right now and you can leverage that into big bucks at a job that opens up in 2 or 3 years, like Penn State, Auburn, Texas, or Georgia (if they don't make a move this year.)

None of the jobs open right now except USCw are top 10 jobs. Minnesota or Maryland would be my choices to try to climb the coaching ladder.
