Who is your hero/role model?

Ah...is this UNHCR a component of the mighty sham that is the UN?

No problem with donating money...just don't see the hero factor in it.

she does more than donate money. she donates her time. not many people are brave enough to go straight into a war zone and deal with the human crisis. it's one thing to send your obligatory 20 bucks to feed the kids in africa once a month, but it's another thing entirely to go to chechnya, sierra leone, liberia, and iraq and actually feed the children and study the situation to come up with effective long-term solutions for the crisis. i know not many people on this board would go to chechnya willingly.

and this is a woman, a pregnant one no less, who goes time and again, and does it without protection and without false pretenses. she does it because she cares, not because showing up at some charity event is gonna boost her opening day for a new flick.

Most of the time these celebs do stuff like this for the press, try to make you forget how hollow and out of touch they are!
yes, and those celebs don't donate a quarter of their income to their alleged cause and travel to dangerous, war-torn countries.

no one really knows the work she does because it's not covered in the media. and that's because that's not her motive. she doesn't care if the coverage is there. this is, for once, a person that lives what she preaches.

She's just like every other celeb. How many times has she gone with no camera or press?

Time, how much time you think she donates and is it more than people that don't have millions and still donate their time?

If she goes into a war zone or some dangerous place willingly, while she is pregnant. I consider her an absolute idiot.

agreed. it's quite easy to donate your time when you have zero to do, millions of dollars, and police and private jets taking you everywhere you want to go. the real heros are the doctors and such working for nothing and living in poverty.

let's work this out logically. i know that can be a challenge for you, but i'll try to break it down into simple steps.

1. angie goes to war torn countries that are so dangerous the press doesn't follow her there.
2. in these countries, and in all others that she visits, there is a record of her trip (including pictures SHE takes, the report she prepares for the UNHCR , and other items) that is maintained by the UNHCR in its official website and other records
3. sometimes she goes to places where the press feels safe enough to go (i.e., a well-secured military base in Iraq)
4. Angie's trip to Iraq was to deal with the refugee issues at the camps. The media did not follow her there.
5. That there are SOME media reports from relatively safe places does not discount the fact that there are other places she goes where the media does not.
6. FINALLY, and probably most important for you to grasp, many of the pictures that the media later obtains are those she herself took. It doesn't mean the media was there with her.

I sincerely hope this helps you.

And I really do mean it, you should read up on the global political economy. Sounds like you could use to expand your horizons and work on that linear logic a bit.

actually, it came from the unhcr. it was taken on one of her missions as a good will ambassador, likely by another unhcr volunteer.

the unhcr makes a regular practice of taking field photos of all its volunteers, often sharing them with the public to raise awareness.

she takes pictures and other volunteers take pictures. it's part of the reporting process all good will ambassadors partake in.

the unhcr licences the photos of angelina jolie, among many others, to the press for general reporting purposes.

of course she wants the pictures out there. it raises awareness. and she's no idiot and of course she uses her celebrity to get attention to the issues. i don't see anything wrong with that. this is a major part of her life. if she was just a regular celeb who goes to benefit fashion shows and $500/plate dinners where only ten per cent of the proceeds actually went to charity, maybe i'd believe that she did this for the attention.

if you actually take the time to read up on how much she dedicates to the unhcr, you could never lump her in with those types of celebs.

since nobody here really knows mrs. jolie personally, does it really matter? i agree it's not smart to go to these places while pregnant, but as for why she's doing it....who knows. that's what everyone needs to keep reminding themselves with.....who knows.

Keith Richards....anyone that can rise from a dead drunk, strum the classic rock riff of all time (Satisfaction) and pass out certainly has the muse whispering in his ear.
