99 yard fumble return discussion

There was no excuse for this happening.

IMO it's on Butch and Dobbs. We have to audible or call a time out to get out of that play. You can't miss the unaccounted for linebacker. He showed what he was going to do and we didn't make any adjustment.

I loved the fight in the result of the game, but I'm still a little concerned about that sequence of events. Like Butch said before it's the little things.

I'd like to see Dobbs given more liberty out there to get us into the correct play or at least call a timeout when we know the play is going to blow up.

Did you miss the rest of the game where we a fantastic job getting it into the end zone from short yardage? It's seems like what you're asking for was given already during the game.

If you look back, I think at the BGSU game, you will see UT with the QB under center at the goal line. It's in the play book.

UT has had major issues with giving up penetration in the middle.

Must be fun to be hating all the time...

What am I reading? Hey everybody let's get together and criticize a player that played his heart out and scored 5 TDS and accounted for 400+ yards the morning after a huge win! Oh but Go Vols!

Amen brother! this was a great play by the defense, and UT could have easily folded, but they never gave up and believed......not like some fans (Negavols). I loved the way they played yesterday, there is some work to be done, but they busted their.....and made millions of fans happy......as for the 1% of those fans.......you know who you are......it is ok to stop watching, posting and complaining about a team that would not have any issues with you leaving.

GO VOLS!!!!! :rock::rock::rock::rock::rock::rock:

Decent point, bad timing...still got afterglow going. :)

You're right, make the read and adjust. Not sure what happened but the fumble, itself, was just one of 'those things'.

Young team learning and I'm sure they will from this.

I understand he is sticking with his offensive philosophy and that is fine. That said, I find it absurd that you can't take the time to install a short yardage package. That fumble and return does not happen in an I formation.

This thread is amazing. Does everyone think Butch is negative too for watching the tape today and learning from the mistake or should he just burn it and say "we won no need"?

Foward progress was stopped IMO!

How in the hell was Debord or Dobbs supposed to know it was going to be a fumble?

I think the offense would work more efficiently if you gave him like 3 plays that he could possibly audible to at the line.

Given this exact thread was started last night, I will give a similar answer.
I'm not going to debate right or wrong call because that's not the real reason we are having this discussion.
If the ball isn't fumbled and we score on the next play...
Or even on that play, if the defense doesn't do a perfect job, no one calls out the playcall.

In other words, questionable calls happen in all games by all coaches.
They aren't discussed unless the 'worst possible' happens.
So I didn't like the call but because it ended with the extreme happening, now it's being overblown.
My question is, with an amazing comeback win over one of the big 3, why focus on
the negative. It was a great game with mistakes by both teams, it's called football.

Unreal you are. The only thing about this freakish play is if it didn't happen we beat Georgia by 14!

It was a dumb call by Debord. Everyone knows it but some can't handle criticism after a win. Hell, most can't handle it after a loss.

Watching on TV it was stupid not to call timeout or for Dobbs to either check to another play to just take off on his own. It was obviously they had everyone coming at that spot on the line and he just handed it off anyway...outside was wide open

If we run up middle on a first and goal from 6 inch line, we should line up under center with Tuttle or Mackenzie full back give it to Hurd for 6 every time. If we ran some I formation Hurd would have flornett type #'s.

Get a freakin' blocker in front of Hurd there, for chrissake. I haven't looked at the play again--but my recollection is that we had an H-back who was going to block in that center-guard gap--but he was positioned by the tackle and Hurd got hammered before he could even get over into the hole. It is only because of Hurd's second and third effort that we have any kind of running game--and it is not very good. AT LEAST half of his yards this year, IMO, have come after he's been hit--and he's often hit on or close to the line of scrimmage.

Just for once I want to see us line up in I-formation on the goal line and let Hurd leap over the top. Hell, put Kahlil at fullback and let him pound one in.

And what would have happened if we had fumbled the Center-QB exchange? You and others would have been blaming the coaches for going under center when Dobbs does not do that often. I have seen, and would guess that others have too, fumbled snaps when the QB is under center (either from not doing it often or when a new center or QB is involved). This occurs even at the NFL level. Players have to practice the exchange to get the timing and feel correct. As you recall, we were also starting a new player at center yesterday. I do not think that was the best time to deviate from what was working.

I saw Dobbs and Hurd running the GA player down. Dobbs needed just one more step and would have knocked the ball loose before it crossed the goal line. Hell, Dobbs out ran two blockers that couldn't stop him as well!

Dobbs finds his performance in lofty company, with only 3 others in NCAA history doing what he did yesterday. All Heisman winners.
