I Remember.......

I remember when it was ok, no, expected, to call a female either ma'am, miss, or lady.

I remember Sugarland Ranger Station prior to 1980, when they use to have the exhibits of what a black bear can do to you and your campsite.

I hate any bear. Id rather try to defuse a bomb than fight a bear.

In Alaska, everyone carries a hand gun when fishing or hunting. Their reasoning, is not to protect themselves from a bear (a hand gun would merely piss off the bear), but in case of bear attack, too shoot the person with them in the knee So you can out run him. Haha

One of my biggest fears, and the cause of any bad dreams for me, is a bear encounter.

When I first joined volnation, I remember hitting the "Report" button about 4 times on different post. Then, I finally realized what the button was for....SMDH (at myself). Lol

I have hiked/backpacked a 1,000 plus miles in the Smokies and the Appalachian Trail (Georgia. Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia) and have never had an encounter with a bear. Raccoons, skunks and an occasional wild boar, but no bears.

Actually, I like bears. They are very intelligent critters but best observed at a distance.

This is especially true when there is a momma bear with cubs. When this happens, to quote Monty Python: "Run away, run away".

I lived in Alaska for 6 years and never saw a bear and I was always fishing.

I took my oldest with me one day to a small lake. We got out of the truck, gear and all, and preceded looking for a good spot. At some point, I noticed some prints and thought too myself, who is the Dumb A$$ walking around out here bare footed? When I saw the 5th print, I noticed indentations about an inch in front of each toe. The hair stood up on my neck, and my son and I hurried back to the truck. Those prints were fresh. Shewwwww!

Night of the Grizzly ruined bears for me.

Grizzlies are not to be messed with. We used to camp around the Tetons and Yellowstone and I was always wary of them. Grizzlies have an extreme sense of smell and are much more powerful that many think.

I've done a lot of hiking and bush whacking in Maine and had a few encounters with bears and moose.... but always felt in control and giving them the proper distance seemed to work well.

Having worked on and off in Montana for 15 years I finally moved here a few years ago, and visit Glacier Park often... but man, I cannot get myself to hike into the back country due stories I hear/read with hikers and hunters getting into trouble with grizzlies. And yes the Night of the Grizzly at Trout Lake in the park is always on my mind when I do venture out. I have hiked the trail where that event happened and even though that happened in 1967 I was on my toes.

Then there was Timothy Threadwell... he seemed to have a good relationship with bears, except during the hyperphagia phase.

The Bears that killed that dude weren't the ones he messed around with. Rangers didn't like him because they thought he was overdomesticating the bears in the park.

And that's why I'm afraid to go to Yellowstone, grizzly bears

Yes, seems like it was an old bear that was not permitted to get his share of salmon and was pretty much going to be toast... so he did the only thing available to him. Treadwell screwed up by coming back and staying too long.

Yeah, his girlfriend wanted to leave and he wouldn't. Sad he got someone else killed with him

I remember buying Orange Crush soda and leaving it on my Bammer friend's desk on Monday following the game. He got 7 free sodas from me. Haha
