'15 GA WR Preston Williams (UT Signee 2/4/15)

Why in the world would you ever punt on 3rd down? What's the logic behind that?

Not sure if anyone answered your question.

Probably only used when both teams have a very good defense, but average or below average offense. Or situations like someone else mentioned that include other factors- weather, etc.

IIRC, Bray quick punted out of the gun. Don't recall the down. Believe it was 4th & we were trying to steal some yards with them being in regular D. Seem to recollect that the punt wasn't real good though.

(1) You can quick kick, but given the firepower of today's offenses, that seems unlikely.

(2) You can line up a spread offense on 4th down with the punter in the sideline, then based on a read, shift to punt formation with a very good kicker shifting from receiver. That can provide personnel advantages.

(3) You can present the threat before the season and make opponents spend time scheming for it.

So I'm guessing since we're still discussing 3rd down punting by a WR, he isn't practicing tonight?

What the dudi is a surprise punt? Coach don't get cute please! Sounds like a disaster but maybe it's propaganda he never plans on using.

He didn't say but I took him to mean they would line up to go for it on 4th down & preston would kick it instead & catch them not ready

Preston technically isn't cleared. So he can't even go through acclimation period.

He was included in team photos Friday & on the sidelines tonight. Its speculated that he passed but is having to wait on ncaa clearance before he can officially practice

When you snap the football for a punt kick on third down you lose a chance to take the ball for a first down which would then grant an addition 4 downs to gain 10 yards.

True, but you don't have to kick it. You could run, pass, or fall on it. Then bring your punt team out

I think the surprise would be Williams running fakes, not quick kicking. That would really only surprise the team if he was the QB

Per P Fort

Williams isn't ready to play yet. While there's been a lot of talk about his straight-line running he hasn't been running routes and cutting and I'm not sure he's cleared to do that.

This is why we can't have nice things!
