You're exactly right. As much as it pains me to say this about Tennessee, we were viewed as a complete trainwreck by the rest of the country at the time and rightfully so. Butch has since quickly changed that perception but he was still relatively unknown at the time he was hired.
I don't blame Bell one bit for not picking Tennessee even though it really stung. He was an instate 5* player that grew up a Vols fan and was completely sh!t on by Dooley. He went to play for a proven winner/scumbag and has developed into an all-American type of player that will be making a ton of money by this time next year.
If I am not mistaken wasn't most of his family wearing Orange thinking he was going to pick UT? I just remember a lot of oeange being worn that day.
Remember his brother that posted on here and kept telling us all week that Vonn was going Ohio State and everyone on here thought he was full of crap. Then there's the fact that Bell called CBJ the night before signing day and told him he would be a Vol.
He trolled Tennessee.
Gotta wonder if that experience didn't partially ignite Butch on the recruiting trail the last 2.5 years. He is leaving nothing to chance on NSD.
I would say you're spot on. Whiffing on Bell and Lawson taught him that you have to be relentless if you want to land the elite talent that is required to win in the SEC. Vonn Bell is probably the reason Butch Jones will never get another wink of sleep on NSD eve until he retires haha.
Lawson handled his recruitment with complete class. Bell on the other hand...
respectfully, if you knew Vonn, you'd know how absolutely absurd it was for Dooley to treat him the way he did. slap to the face. Not only that, the only shot we potentially had with Vonn was butch but even he couldn't pull him from a beautiful recruiting job that OSU had on Vonn. If Butch had another month on him, we'd of had him
