'15 IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr (UT Commit 12/15/14)

Per Hubbs

Elsewhere on defense, Darrin Kirkland Jr. has garnered some praise. On Thursday he was aggressive and physical especially coming off the shoulder injury, but he's also shown some take charge ability in making calls and knowing schemes. By no means has he separated himself at the position in three days into camp, but the pre-camp hope/expectation was that he would put himself into the competition for the position and he's lived up to that billing to start camp.

Bates is a guy that will make his presence felt when the pads are popping. He isnt the flashy athlete that jumps out in shorts. He is football savvy so hopefully he makes his move now that pads are on

I thought he was one of the most athletic LBs we have?

He was last year. Maybe he still is. I'm thinking compared to eyeball test of an Austin Smith and Sapp in shorts and a workout session. Those type of guys are going to catch your attention in that setting. So that is Likely why people hear their names and immediately think we'll what about bates. There hasn't been much said about LBs performance since they have only seen them in drills. I'm not worried about him. I bet we hear some good things here soon now that pads are popping

My favorite freshmen Vol, tough with Big Mac, Shy, Preston and the three incredible athletes at QB we brought in to pick one. But I love mean MLB, and this kid will be a force.
He and Taylor are ones I'm really excited about besides Mac of course

Bates is an athlete...his sparq score at the opening will tell you how athletic he is...

Only thing that I have heard is that he may be a little slower at picking up the defense. Maybe due to missing so much time last year. But that was said a while ago by Thig in the Spring.

atleast there is a ton of talent at LB. No more falling back on John Propst or Greg King. I know those guys are VFL but its good to see the options we have.
