You may be correct, but when it comes to debates he'll show a lot of the other candidates up. Plus his record has few blemishes and no major issues.
In 1994 as a member of congress he voted for the assault weapons ban and has had a F rating from the NRA for most of his career. He supports common core and expanded Medicaid under Obamacare. His candidacy is most likely a non-starter.
I remember "only romney can win"
I remember "only mccain can win"
neither of those two were anything close to far right. it's also important to note neither of those were ever president.
The point was missed - unless your assertion is that the GOP primary hasn't been a one up-manship on conservative values.
There play was absolutely to that of conservative voters - the fact that their competitors were certifiable loons made it easier for them. They were just the most electable - that's why I find it odd that Trump leads. No sane person would bet a nickle on a nomination, let alone a win in the general.
Out of the Republican field I think there's only a few guys that could win the general election:
John Kasich (Dems probably praying he isn't the nominee)
Rand Paul (I think he could galvanize a lot of support vs Hillary ticket)
Jeb Bush (not a fan but he has a lot of political capital and he is more likable than Hillary)
Scott Walker(perennial election winner but social conservative) A theocrat won't win the general.
Marco Rubio(not particularly special but smart and hispanic, I think he would be a good VP choice) He's an empty suit, though I agree would be a solid VP choice.
