...to Central Michigan of all places. Antonio Brown (#8) and JJ Watt (#1) were voted by their peers in the NFL as two of the top ten players in the game right now. Both were unheralded 2 star prospects that CBJ recruited. Talk about an eye for talent.

Given this track record, I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to offering guys like Emmanuel Moseley a scholarship when his only other offer is a mid-major. Or this year, when he accepted commitment from guys like TaDarryl Marshall and Corey Henderson when we have limited spots and there are more highly regarded recruits showing interest in us.

Its good to know that our coach know what he's doing when it comes to recruiting.

The only guy we really need to point to on this roster is Cam Sutton. He was a 3* and essentially an afterthought in the class. Now he is one of the best DBs in the country. Butch and Co. definitely have an eye for underrated talent.

Stars beside a guys name, or offers don't always make them great. I like the talent Butch has brought in, and the effort they give. I'll trust his judgement with whoever he brings in.

This thread is almost laughable.... It's more like he got the table scraps that were left for the dog after the big boys ate and every once and a while you get lucky. CBJ is a fantastic recruiter but the leap you made here is wider than the Grand Canyon.

Sutton was a Dooley commitment.

And Martinez fought like heck to keep him away from Auburn. Low rated but certainly not an afterthought. We had no CBs on the roster. Him and Riyadh Jones were pretty much gauranteed starting spots. One of them anyway.

I believe Butch also recruited Eric Fisher to Central Michigan who was the #1 overall pick in 2013. The OP didn't claim that he was beating the Big Ten out for recruits while at CMU, just that you can make a case that he has a good eye for some overlooked talent or players that were late bloomers.

The point that you seem to be missing is that Butch has enough examples of finding talent, that when it seems he's reaching for a prospect? He's not. In the past he had to take chances...now he doesn't.

Ah right I forgot Sutton was a Dooley commitment actually. Afterthought might not be the right word, but I do remember people being disappointed we couldn't get a bigger name DB, but that was pretty much par for the course with Dooley.

It doesn't sound like Watt's time at CMU - or his usage - went all too positively:

Watt received a scholarship offer from Central Michigan University and committed there. There, Watt was led to believe he would be scoring touchdowns at his position as tight end. However, after only eight catches and 2007 nearing its end, Watt knew that was not the case. He was approached by coaches to move to offensive tackle, but this move did not play a role in his leaving, as Watt felt that there was no room for him to grow. He also wanted to move closer to home and play defensive end at Wisconsin, so Watt gave up his starting spot and scholarship to walk-on at the University of Wisconsin.

Let's include Josh Dobbs. He was a 3 star not recruited by 'big' schools. Jones worked like hell to flip him with limited time. Dobbs has grown into a very good QB, but what impresses me the most is his leadership and work ethic. Jones has an eye for talent, without a doubt.

TrueOrange nailed it.

Yes, Watt was at Cen. Michigan but he was expecting to play TE, which he didn't even do. Then they asked him to play OL (lol?). Evidently not til Wisc was he a DE.

Some shine at the right time. Do you know the defensive guy who was good at ky, but went undrafted? My dad mentions him a lot. I think he's one of the defensive captains for the broncos, but can't recall his name. The JJ talk brought him to mind.

We will find out this year how good he is. I hope plays well, but we haven't seen a whole season from him yet.

So Butch doesn't get credit for recognizing that he had talent?

Danny Trevathan? He was drafted (6th round)

This is really uncalled for. Do you realize how many 2 star recruits there are? Sure, it probably wasn't had to recruit those guys, but the point is: out of all of the 2 and 3 star guys out there butch knows how to spot a diamond in the rough.

I couldn't find Scout, but Dobbs was a 4-Star by every recruiting service except Rivals. If I remember correctly, which is always a stretch, he was a 4-Star on Scout as well.
