2015 Preseason FPI: Ohio State still No. 1 in updated rankings - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

ESPN came out with their first edition of the FPI ranking before spring ball. The link above has the updated rankings post spring ball but unlike the pre-spring rankings this list did not include special teams.

I did a comparative analysis of TN offense to Opponent Defense and Opponent Offense to Tennessee Defense and threw in the Special Teams comparison as well as the home field variable to arrive at theoretical game spreads based on the pre-spring rankings. That analysis is posted somewhere back in this thread or it's predecessor. Based on the updated rankings, I updated my model and the spread moved in Tennessee's favor in every game on our schedule. Our offense got a small bump but our defense got a huge bump post-spring. Other teams went up and down as well with Arkansas taking a huge plunge in their defensive ranking. As a result of plugging in the new ratings for everyone's offense and defense the model continues to have us favored in every game we play this year with the exception of Alabama only as noted the spread has improved in our favor in every game. We'd even be favored against Alabama by 2 points if the game was at home. To be clear our advantage over GA, AR, OU, FL, & MO is less than a TD so in the world of "any given Saturday", it would probably take a small miracle to sweep them all----but at least the data is saying there's a chance. :)

@Alabama +5.0
Georgia -3.7
Arkansas -5.2
@Florida -5.8
@Missouri -6.5
Oklahoma -6.8
@Kentucky -12.6
South Carolina -17.1
Vanderbilt -21.2
Bowling Green -28.7
North Texas -35.9
Western Carolina -47.3

I believe home field only gives you a FG. If your model is correct, Bama would still be favored in Neyland by 2.

Congrats to our Girls in the Red, White, & Blue

JRM is above the 10th slot by himself. This is a joke......

8. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, Tennessee

While studying teammate A.J. Johnson for the 2015 draft, my eyes kept being drawn to No. 34 as he looked more like an NFL prospect than Johnson. Reeves-Maybin is a little smaller than teams would like, but he's very good at sifting and sorting through the traffic and coming out on the other side for the tackles. He's not a take-on linebacker and must be proficient and diligent with his hands to keep himself clean. He needs to have his tackles for losses exceed his missed and broken tackles this season. Reeves-Maybin can cover and blitz, which makes him an every-down linebacker on this level and the next.

JRM has to be an attractive LB prospect to NFL teams with how the game is changing. LB that runs like a Saftey and makes plays when plays need to be made. special teams assassin too

SIAP Von Pearson, Vic Wharton among players that didn

Innocent till proven guilty? Geesh. I just don't understand how he can continually get punished yet not be charged. No clue about his innocence or guilt, but move forward one way or another.

Anybody have any insight on how Drae Bowles is given a ring, yet Wharton denied? Seems pretty arbitrary to me.

Because the innocent until proven guilty standard only applies to the legal system. Butch is well within his rights to suspend him indefinitely to protect the integrity of the program.

Barrett Sallee was on the radio in Atlanta last night talking about the upcoming season. He said he wasn't buying into UGA, he thought they had a lot of glaring weaknesses and that Tennessee "clearly has the the most balanced roster in the East." He thought the only weakness for Tennessee was the OL, but that they should be improved with the 4 returning starters. He thought UGA has too much to replace on defense and the lack of a QB and WR's was going to limit their offense.

From the West he thought Arkansas was still a year away. They have to replace all the key players on their D.

Don't tell these idiots in the press. Kid made a lot of plays. Is throwback LB that should've reminded true UT fans of the Chavis backers. He really attacks downhill in a hurry when he reads run. Hits hard too. I think he'll benefit more than anyone from the big DTs coming in. Should have a huge season at LB for us.

Would y'all take a 9-5 season right now if it meant we made the SECCG and lost both it and the bowl game, or would you take 10-3 if it meant finishing 2nd in the East and winning the bowl?

THe second outcome is a MUCH better perception. The first one looks like we won a really crappy division and are overrated. Definitely number two

Both. But honestly the 2nd option would be better. It makes us look like we should be in the playoff and sets up for a huge 2016 title run.

9-5 with an SECCG and (HARDFOUGHT) bowl loss.

That would mean 3 regular season losses, conceivably none to SECe teams. If we lock down the division, that shows more long-term legitimacy IMO. A hard fought bowl loss would make this team even hungrier to start 2016.

This reads Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas.

I would just as easily switch Georgia for Oklahoma, and I'd definitely switch Mizzou for Alabama. The caveat is that we'd need a tie breaker if there's a 6-2 round robin scenario like 2007.

Question: Rumor is Florida St and West Virginia are going to open up the 2018 season in Jacksonville. We were suppose to open up with West Virginia in Charlotte in 2018. I was also under the assumption that the contract had been signed. Well with this new development, and with what is going on with the 2017 Chik-fil-a kickoff game, is Tennessee setting up for a home and home series with somebody instead of the one-off kickoff games?

I have heard that the 2017 Chik-fil-a kickoff game with Georgia Tech could be moved to Labor Day and I haven't discounted this information either.

As a younger fan, I would love to do a home and home with Tech just for historical purposes (not a fan of chop blocking). My dad and grandpa use to talk about that rivalry.

No information regarding future scheduling, but like you, I have fond remembrances of playing Georgia Tech. Many may recollect when Tech could have been considered our top rival, at least right there with Alabama. You have to go back to the '50s to remember those days.
