Post-op rehab for ACL repairs unsed to focus on open chain kinetics as closed chain trauma was source of tears.
Open chain = foot not fixed or not touching anything such as leg extension or flexion machines.
Closed chain = foot on ground such as squats, walking, running, etc.
Well a group of therapists at Parkland pointed out that the non compliant patients were progressing faster and had better outcomes than the compliant patients.
The compliant patients were strictly open chain kinetic exercises. The noncompliant patients were using closed chain kinetics and weight bearing.
Followup research proved that closed chain kinetics aided faster healing, better balance, stronger muscles, stronger ACL repair and less chance of reinjury. Totally changed the post op rehab of injuries...
True story.
