Haha. I've seen a few episodes over the past couple years but not recently. Should I be?

This season they have quite the fabulous individual. He's pretty stereotypical it almost makes me wonder if it's an act. But I can't stop laughing at him.

Best part is at 16:25. I almost fell out of my chair laughing.

We have a triple crown winner in my lifetime. I guess I can go back to waiting for the Cubs to win the world series...

They had a crowd of about 90 thousand people & I bet you everyone in attendance put their money down on American Pharoah. The Belmont Park paid out some jack today for damn sure.

:p Yeah, probably not since I can't find the definition of that word "paramutuel" in the dictionary.

The track takes about 20 percent of each dollar wagered, sometimes a little more or less but that's fair estimate. The rest goes into a prize pool and is divided equally amongst winning tickets on a per dollar basis.

For simplicity's sake, assume $100 total is wagered. The track takes $20. Whichever horse wins, divide the number of winning bets into the remaining $80 and that's the payout. The total, $80, doesn't change. But of course the favorite has more winning tickets, so pays less. That's why the odds are lower -- because more people are betting on it.

If the 3 to 5 shot wins, the same $80 ges paid out. If the 20 to 1 shot wins, the same $80 gets paid out. It's not as though the favorite winning costs the track more than if a long shot does because the total is the same.

The track doesn't care because they get their $20. Over time the track's best interests are served by a mix of favorites and long shots winning over time because that keeps the money circulating amongst race bettors, and therefore being bet again and again (minus 20 percent each time).

It's the details that are missing from the caption.
