I absolutely wish Jerod Mayo the best! But I dont see why he is going pro. He definately WONT be a first rounder and i beleive he was projected a mid round pick. whatever happend to people having pride for there school and coming back. If millions of dollars were on the table I could see why you would leave but he wont get that kind of money for a while.

he got his degree. What else do you expect from a student-athlete? Give up millions in your chosen profession to come back to school and live off your monthly stipend? Please...

it's about the T not the money. I agree no one that leaves early has pride for Tennessee especially a third rounder

Right, and I'm sure if someone offered you a million dollars to start spending your spare time on an NFL board you would turn it down. These decisions affect these young men for the rest of thier lives. Mayo has been hampered by injury his whole career, and if he feels that risking career ending injury is not worth staying another year then good for him. I wish him the best.

To quote Kinky Friedman: "Everything has been sold american".

The same thing has happened at every other school on the planet.

Mayo is projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick. For comparison, the packers signed 3rd round linebacker Abdul Hodge to a 4 year, 2.4 million dollar contract in 2006.

Tennessee Pride? Well, it's pretty good sausage.

As for Mayo, it's completely unfair to hold it against him for going pro. For one thing, the man is graduating. He's graduating in less than four years, which makes the program look good. And unlike Peyton Manning, who likely would have turned pro after the '95 season if he hadn't come from a rich family, Mayo's family probably doesn't have much and he's going to be able to change their lives for the better.

so we really wanna kid ourselves into believing that it's about the T moreso than personal well being.

Mayo made the right call. It hurts our football team to some degree, but big time sports is no longer about the team. Free agency and over the top incomes have made sure of that.

Jerod Mayo is from Hampton, Virginia. He didn't grow up dreaming of wearing the orange and white one day; he grew up dreaming of playing in the NFL. He came to Knoxville to help him achieve that professional goal. It's unfair to expect these kids whom we recruit from around the country to have the same boundless, irrational love for Tennessee football that a fan does; they come to Knoxville for the equivalent of a vocational school.

Mayo has his degree, a reasonable draft projection, and apparently thinks that the improve-draft-position-vs.-injury calculation comes down on the side of going now. I don't see how Vol fans can do anything but wish him the best.

Mayo will go early 2nd IMO. He will get a contract that will pay him enough money that if he were to invest properly, will set him up for success the rest of his life. I for one hope he does this and is successful. Good luck JM.

I cannot blame any college athlete for going pro. If some company, or what have you, offered me millions of dollars to leave graduate school early I'd do it. I'm sure most people here would do it. Loyalty to your family and friends is often going to come before loyalty to your school. I'm sure a number of our premiere players can use the money to support themselves and their families, and when the young men have completed their degrees what more can you ask of them?

Mayo has his degree.

He's a lock to make more money his first year out of college than the overwhelming majority does.

Good luck Mayo.

I absolutely agree and more. He had so much pride in the University and even moreso in himself to work hard and earn his degree early as well as star on the football field. I wish we had more young men like him on the team.

Good Luck Jerod :salute:

I think the millions he will make might have something to do with it...

He's projected to go in the 2nd round according to ESPN's guy....I'm pretty sure second rounders get million dollar contracts

I understand the originator's frustration with his decision to go for the money. But we should all ask ourselves why he chose UT in the first place. Most scholarship athletes came for the education and the opertunity to showcase their talents for the move to the next level. It sure isn't an undying love of UT, or Bama, or Florida, or Appy State. It's for the opportunities which are best suited to the individual. I say"Go for the gold Mayo, and get every dime you can."

I bet the OP wouldn't care if a chemistry major graduated in 3 years and went on to a high level biochemistry job.

I was worried for a minute when I saw the thread title.

I hate not to be able to "Take home a package of..."
