Well, for me the entire process obviously begins and ends with Fulmer and the amount of control he is willing to relinquish to get the right guy.
Initially his verbage was on the money. His excitement over the prospects of "mixing things up" on the hill had me excited as well. In his more recent interviews he seems to be regressing a bit. In other words, I fear that the right person for the job is the brilliant coordinator who is willing to do everything Fulmer would do in every situation......
I hope I don't sound short sighted. Initially, for some reason I thought Fulmer might loosen the reigns a bit. With Spence turning down offer number two, I fear that instead of becoming more introspective as to why that might be happening, CPF will circle the wagons and find a "yes" man.
CPF is in a precarious spot. It is not as easy as it looks. By keeping his post, he has earned the right to make this decision.
I think you hit the nail on the head, Lex, Phil's scared guys off during the interviews. Just look at Cignitti and Spence. I also find it disheartening that Phil went back to Spence and upprd the ante, only to be rebuffed. Why does Phil have to beg a Clemson coach to come to the Hill?
I assume the GVX article is the reason you sense a turn.... Granted it's tone is a bit more reticent, but the fact that he must get this right keeps the prospects good that he winds up making an acceptable decision.
He now must land one of these outside candidates. Anything less would be atacit admission that he couldn't get the job done.
I think it may have something to do with the overall perception of tennessee football right now. We've just done absolutely nothing for so long its starting to take it's toll nation wide. I do know that our neighbors down to the south of us have no problem picking up linemen. In fact if you look at bama's last two classes they're loaded with d-line talent and it makes me sick. I don't care what anyone says were not recruiting as good as we used to. It has us in this percarius position of being way to thin on the d-line quality and depth are hurting really bad.I don't understand why we're not in the running for more D-line prospects.. if we're in the running for anybody, I haven't heard about it. You think these players would be drooling over the prospect of playing here... anybody with size and speed is probably going to get some playing time right away.
thank you....do you think Pete Carroll quits recruiting QBs because he has a couple of blue chippers sitiing on the sideline? If Phil really said that, then I dont know what to say, we'd better average 42 points a game next year. This kind of comment helps me to understand why we always have a great recruiting year followed by a mediocre one.

Well......what QBs has USC taken in the last two classes? Just being knit-picky. We supposedly have some commitments that have not been made publicly. That is why he says he likes where we are with offensive recruiting. On a side note, talked to a coach in the know and Wilks just recieved his ACT score the other day and is fully qualified. He is also not in the least bit worried about the coaching situation.

I heard on the radio this morning that Tennessee Tech's head coach Watson Brown was seen in a meeting with Fulmer. I doubt that this is any big news, because people close to Fulmer said that he is not a candidate but why else would they be meeting so close to a coaching opening?
Ummm, Mark Sanchez - Football Recruiting
Top of his class in 2005. They'll have another top QB in 2009 too, probably in this guy:
Matt Barkley - Football Recruiting
So who really cares? They will always have "the guy" there.

Interesting......I notice they also have an AA meeting scheduled.Coaches Assn
If you look at the convention schedule you will see:
1. Chavis is speaking.
2. Roper is speaking.
3. There is a PRIVATE UT Meeting & Etc.
and etl.

Nice job of answering as if you didnt even read my question. '06 and '07 USC did not recruit a big time QB because of the current crop of QBs that they already had on campus. Since they have not gotten one in the last two years they are now in great shape with Barkley. That was the point. He made a statement that Carroll would go after a big time QB no matter who he had on campus. That is not true. Was just pointing that out.
